Do all cars have the CANBUS wiring? I was looking to upgrade my sidelights to the LED sidelights, however after reading SCv16's posts, he found the LEDs brought up the CANBUS error, however I have a base model, 1.2 A/C, so will this car also have the CANBUS wiring?

canbus bulb identification mark

what is the identification mark on a canbus bulb, as apposed to a non canbus bulb?
i wish to put together a spare bulb set, but can not see any reference to canbus on the bulb web sites i have viewed for my particular model, a seat ibiza year 2010.
thank you.

You only need to worry about canbus if you're using LEDs. Any regular bulbs will be fine. In reality there is no such thing as a canbus bulb.

If you get LED bulbs, you can get ones that claim to be CANBUS error free. The ones I originally bought off eBay brought up an error when I switched the engine on, but if I cycled the lights stayed off. Other people have had better luck.

Basically they're just an LED with a resistor built in to draw more power.

bulb

thank you for clarifying that, i thought canbus was the bulb type.

I might be totalyl off the wall here, but this is my understanding of Canbus...

Canbus (=Car Area Network bus) is the VW version of what all cars have these days.Computers! In the same way the engine is controlled by an ECU that responds to sensors in all parts of the engine and fuel system, the Canbus system links all the interior, dashboard, audio and other 'comfort' components and monitors and controls them.

In the old days, each lightbulb was physically wired back to its switch, which was fed via the fusebox from the battery. With Canbus, the lights are wired back to a lighting controller, which connects to Canbus via 2 wires. The lightswitch panel and stalk are wired to an instrument controller that also has a 2-wire connection to Canbus. When you flick a switch, Canbus detects it from the instrument controller and sends the appropriate message to the lighting controller. In theory, a software re-write could completely alter which switches control which parts in the car without any physical rewiring.

(I used to have a Citroen where the system was known as Vanbus - Vehicle Area Network. After fitting a 3rd-party audio headunit, I gradually found the steering wheel stalk controls for other functions began to stop working because the software was so flaky.)

Canbus measures the current draw of the lighting circuits, on the basis that standard bulbs are in use, so it can warn you of bulb failures. LED bulbs have a much lower wattage and therefore draw a lot less current, which would result in an error. So some LED vendors will put extra resistors in parallel with their bulbs to draw more current and keep Canbus happy. Obviously you then lose the benefit of LED's saving power, but there you go!

My understanding is much like Wimbledonian's.

I'd just add that an advantage of Canbus is that it saves some of the yards and yards of wiring which would otherwise be necessary.

For example in the door of the car there can be a controller controlling locks, windows, mirrors etc. with the switches on the inside of the door also wired to it. The wiring to the rest of the car need then only be power and bus rather than wires from each individual switch and device.

My basic understanding is the same, however it seems that the canbus wiring in the Ibiza is pretty advanced, and LED bulbs with built in resistors will still cause a bulb failure light on the dashboard.

To the best of my knowledge there are no LEDs currently in production that will not casuse the bulb failure light. Even turning off the bulb checking in VCDS still doesn't stop the light lol!

Slightly OT - does anybody know which Mk5 Ibizas have the bulb failure warning light enabled? A dip headlamp bulb went bye-byes on my 2011 1.2TSi DSG 5 door SE and no bulb failure light came on - asked in the SEAT garage but they didn't have a clue.

The bulb failure warning is marked as one of the many 'if fitted' items in the handbook, so I'm wondering if it isn't fitted or the bulb warning light needs a bulb warning light!

I have 2 LED sidelights and 2 normal sidelights, as per VRSLoz's original thread, no issues.
tbh, I wouldn't bother in future as hey're slightly different whites, so would jsut get 4x Ultra 501's and be done with it. no warning light, nice white light
jobs a goodun

I think all MK5 Ibiza's have it FITTED - it's part of the canbus capability.

Wether it is switched on or not is one of those Spanish lottery things.

Some of us used LED reverse bulbs without issues - others had warning lights on when using them.

The document I've seen states that it's possible to configure just which bulbs are monitored for failure - perhaps on yours the headlight failure isn't enabled.
