Can not get reverse gear to engage :S

hi guys, just a quick one really, ive gone to use my car last night and couldnt select reverse (push down top left) no matter how hard i tried, forward gears work and engage. Its a 56 mk4 ibiza fr 20vt and i have done a search on the forum which suggests its something to do with the cable opperated gear box. I have had the gear gator off so i can see where the gear stick sits on top of the box and you can see the spring compress but the gate wont open for it to select reverse.

Any idea whats wrong and how do i go about fixing it?

cheers guys, pars911

Check on top of the gearbox that there's nothing blocking the mechanism. Sometimes bits fall into the way

just had a look and there doesnt seem to be anything blocking or getting in the way, i just cant find much info on it. It cant be a uncommon fault, i hope lol

Mines had this fault twice over the 84k i've done in the car and its been fixed by the garage readjusting the gear linkages. Can't tell you how they did it but it did take them a number of goes on each occasion to get it working smoothly again.

Mine used to also have issues going into 1st & reverse, but more annoying was sometimes it would go into 1st or reverse and get jammed so I couldn't change gear without turning the engine off, pumping the clutch a couple of times and then it would disengage!

ahhhhh problem solved. False alarm, the gearbox and linkages are fine. All that happened was that where i store my loose change in the ashtray under the pop up lid, a 10P had fallen out through one of the holes in the ashtray and blocked the reverse linkage so it wouldnt engage. I managed to get a bit of superglue on the end of a long electricians screwdriver and pulled it out to safety lol.

So if anyone stores there change in the ash tray and there car doesnt engage into reverse look out for the loose change.

Thanks anyways guys and sorry to be a pain lol ;)
