I know this seems to be a popular topic however i still havent found a straight answer...

I'm currently on 63000 miles (LCR), and the Dealer has recommend to get the cam belt changed, i've heard rumours that it is rare that a belt would go before 80k. To accompany this issue i also need 2 new tyres, a service, some front brake pads and the exhaust mount is coming off (apparently a common problem). Naturally i wanna get it all done but i'm a bit strapped for cash at the mo so its like one "job" per month so to speak!

Anyways is it worth getting the cam belt done ASAP as i dont fancy an engine rebuild if it breaks! Am i pushing it by not getting the belt changed for another few thousand miles, and getting a service and some tyres instead?

Cheapest ive found so far ofr a change is £258, does any one know any where cheaper? (near sheffield)

I have read at the dealers that... For both LC and LCR and all VAG cars with this type of engine, that the CAM belt must be "Checked" at every service after 60K and changed at 120K if not done already.

However, I have heard stories of then going early so I will be getting mine done, along with the Tensioners and a Brass Impellor Water Pump change at my next service. 50K. (Only really because its one of the a cheaper services and it will help me to spread the costs).

Hope this helps

There is another thread hereabout's about this, but you really should be getting the cam belt done at that sort of mileage, unless you want all sorts of grief if it goes bang, then your into some really serious sheckles....

Not bad at all.

Just had mine done too, plus new brakes all round, plus new pushes on both sides. Mega ££s. Much better for it though. With regards to changing the cam belt, it's not so much the belt that's the trouble, it's the tensioners that fail obviously still resulting in a certain amount of valve related headaches if/when they do. Think you did the right thing.
