Buying Ibiza 1.2/1.4tdi

Evening all,

Will be looking to buy an Ibiza 1.2 or 1.4tdi after christmas, and I have a few questions if you don't mind beforehand.

I'm nearly 17, so obviously this will be my first car - has anyone had the 1.4tdi as their first car and got insured? If so, what was the quote like...i know it will vary for each individual, I live in a decent area so hopefully that won't affect things.

The 1.4tdi..i've seen videos on here and on youtube of the smoke from the exhaust and the rough running of the engine...anyone that owns one, what is the engine like? Is it quick? Looking at the stats, it has near twice as much torque as the 1.2 so i'm guessing it will be alot quicker lower down.

Also the 1.2...I would be interested to hear from anyone who has one also...is the engine decent enough?

I'm sure this has been covered before, but, is there anything I should look out for when looking for either model? Obviously service history to backup the mileage etc.

I'm sure i'll think of a few more questions later on...hope you don't mind. :)

im 17, had a 1.2 s for 2/3 months now, doesnt seem too bad, ride is noisey and whining gear box which is normal but to be honest i like it as it is, being a first car and all. Insurance is average i suppose, guess who you're with.

I'm 18 & have a 1.2 ibiza sx, really nice first car, good on fuel, handles well & quite popular.

My insurance is £1800 full comp, with me as a first driver with Liverpool Victoria.

Should drop to £1200 after 1 years no claims. :)

The 1.4 doesn't seem as common, but the new 1.4 ecomotive ibiza is apparently Ronseal & it does what it says on the tin.

The difference i got in quotes for the 1.2 & the 1.4 were the same pretty much.

I have to also mention that the 1.2 engine is quite nippy at 3500-4000 revs & the FR/Cupra models mapped must be rapid!

I was 18 when i had my 1.4TDI , im now 20

Ive never had any problems at all as far as the engine , its a brilliant little engine , For a 1.4 3 cylinder Diesel its very fast , Ive had mine remapped by Custom Code and its even better now

As far as the smoke issue , Its a Diesel , its supposed to smoke! but The 1.4TDI with standard exhaust doesnt smoke that much, You hardly see it
Im guessing the videos you have seen are of 1.4TDI's with custom exhausts , with a custom exhaust mine would smoke aswell.

I went from a 1.2 16v (75BHP) Punto To a 1.4TDI (80BHP) and it feels alot faster and obviously has got alot more Torques , After the Remap it felt even better

Have a look at my Readers Ride Thread it will give you and idea of what can be done to them

Thanks for the replies, all. :)

Andrew - stunning looking car you have there, thanks for the advice.

If anyone else has had the 1.4tdi as their first car, I would be interested to know what your insurance quote was...just to know what to expect. I think i've got my heart set on the TDI, but obviously if the insurance is too dear it won't be worth it.

Cheers again.

I agree with Chris

My Insurance for 1.4TDI was about £200 cheaper than 1.2 16V Petrol , Unfortunetly at the age of 20 with 3 years NCB and no points or claims its still not that cheap

I would say get the 1.4TDI , The reason i say that is the 1.2 engine is Non Turbo'd so therefore a Remap will hardly make a difference. With The 1.4TDI having a Turbo it means a Remap will make a difference.
Its ok saying im not going to Modify it for more power, thats what i said but 2 years down the line its been mapped up.

Unfortunetly now after 2 years im so used to the power than i need a bigger car now

I had a 1.2S, Fantastic little engine and I had it till 24,000 miles and traded it in for a 1.9TDI
If I had a second chance I would of bought the 1.4TDI however, Exceptional economy nice torque and nippy.

I'd personally go for the diesel as its faster and its much easier to get more power out of it if you want it (i.e remap)

I own the 1.2 myself, don't get me wrong its a great engine but afer a year or so of getting used to it, it can feel a bit slow. You have to push it quite a bit to get something out of it and theres hardly any mods you can do to improve performance. Its great for a starter car though, if you want something more long run (i.e 2+ years) i'd go diesel

Depends on how long you want the car really, both are great cars

I too have a 1.2SX but given the choice the 1.4Tdi would win hands down.
Although it may be hard to find a 1.4Tdi, the best advantages are, road tax is pocket change or free if you can find an ecomotive version. The power is pretty good from what I've driven.

i drive a 1.2s good running car and quite nippy, i personally would choose the 1.4tdi now that i have been driving over 2 years but not when i passed my test as insurance on the 1.2 is high enough......i was 17 when i forst got the car and insurance was soo bad i had to put my mum as the main driver and me as named, 2nd year swapped it round to me as main driver and mum as named and was still about £1400 i think, and this year now im 19 same with 1 years no claims i think i was about £1200 or £1000 cant remember, trust me insuring a 1.4 tdi wont be easy.......I recently done a quote on a FR-Tdi for next year when i have 2 years no claims and it will be about £1500 but thats good as its a massive jump in engine size and insurance group.I would get the 1.2 till you get ur feet in the ground and start building no claims up, there is plenty to do with ur 1.2 body mod wise tho look at my link below. I love my car and yeah its a 1.2 but only some people know that, as its looks like the 1.8 20vT cupra.

I think it will come down to insurance between the two and if you can find a decent 1.4 tdi as they are not as common.

I think scott has shown to good effect what you can do to the looks of the 1.2 Ibiza without going off the deep end insurance wise. His 1.2 pretty much looks the same as my FR, if not better with the Cupra wheels :)

The 1.2 although not an outright fast car will still be a lot of fun as a first car. The fact you will need to push it harder can be rewarding practicing getting through the gearbox in record speed.

A 1.4tdi will feel faster esp with your mates on board, and yes its easier to mod but you will have to get a lot of ins quotes and really shop around to bring it down to near a 1.2 price.

Either way best of luck mate :D

The Ecomotive has the same engine as mine 1.4TDI BNV 80bhp , i think however it has a DPF filter which will restrict it more....Hence the Tax being less

Depending on how much youve got to spend on a car mate , Mine is technically up for sale as i was going to trade it in , In January
