Hey guys..
As title suggests, just had Sachs clutch & OEM DMF fitted to my stage 2 Cupra.

Mechanic said when u slip the clutch (hill starts, pulling away slowly, sloped drive etc) it produces an instant (strong!!) burning smell - sure he said it would go away though.

Been in car for 93 mile of steady ish driving (trying to bed it in)

Is the smell normal? Will it go away??

Cheers

Out of interest (if you don't mind me asking) how much was your clutch?

Did you re-use your DMF or put a new one in?

Only reason I'm asking is I'm booked in for revo stage 2 at statller on the 8th June and I'm still on standard clutch.

Cheers mate

Was about £960 ish (FR Kris on here...) for upgraded Sachs clutch kit & OE DMF. Changed both. Didn't want to find out both were gone with a view of only changing one etc..always best to change both (plus I'm 63,000 miles now & stage 2. Would only be a matter of time lol)
£300 to fit Clutch/DMF AND supply & fit OE PCV valve AND fit cam follower (I supplied) awesome price! :)

The smell is perfectly normal and it's just the clutch material that your smelling.
After you've done around 400 miles it should pretty much stop unless your really riding the clutch which a standard clutch would smell also.
I've had 3 of these kits now and the first one in my Leon I was concerned but sure enough after 400 miles it stops.
The one I fitted in my cupra R was the same and Kevscupra is still running it now quite happy with no problems.
I fitted one of these to my S3 last Saturday (same clutch) and it seems to have stopped smelling now at 300 miles and the little vibration when moving off in 1st or reverse had now gone too.
Very good reliable kit for fast road use hence I've bought 3!
So back to your question it's just the material bedding in to the mating surfaces a bit like when brakes bed in.

I started off in stock mode and managed 15 miles before the sps got plugged in and map back on.
That's what I like about the sps you can change the map whilst driving and you feel it!

I've fit well over 200 clutchs in my time and never smelt once. It sounds like who ever fit the clutch didn't cleaned the fly wheel and clutch pressure plate before fitting. If this is the case. I would take it back and warranty the clutch. Before the protective grease puts a shine on the clutch plate and causes slipping

Had a smell from mine too, exact same setup as the OP described, Sachs stage 1 with OEM DMF.

After I'd done around 500 miles of steady driving to bed it in the smell went, also got a little judder on the clutch when moving about slowly on the biting point but hardly noticeable.

The smell you get for 500 miles is the oil burning off cause it won't fit right. Yeh it will burn it off and not smell after so many miles but your plate will have a shine and not last as long

Crafoo.. That's EXACTLY what I get.. Slight judder when reversing or first setting off in 1st, then it's fine..and also the smell. Glad to hear it's happened to others lol :)

I'd put the judder down to a "feature" ;) heard a few that have the same set up have had a little judder right on the biting point when moving around at low speed, don't think there is anything to worry about bud :)

In terms of the smell, I see what turbomick put and I'll bow to your greater knowledge pal but the smell was very infrequent and only noticeable again when performing parking manoeuvres or similar, it wasn't a constant.

Being a mechanic myself and fitted loads of clutches over the years I'd tend to agree with you.

But not in this case these are uprated sports organic clutches and this is a perfectly normal bedding in smell.
Because the clutches are so hard for performance use this smell is the coating coming off the drive plate.
I've fitted 3 of these on my own cars and every one of them was cleaned and properly prepared and installed 110% and this is just a characteristic of this setup.

I've got a stage2 Sachs with a Loba SMF, I've covered 1500 miles or there abouts and I haven't smelt anything, maybe it's more Dual Mass related !

Nope, I have had it early on with my Loba smf, but rarely get it now - only if I am a bad boy with the bite point
