Brand-specific tyre fitment?

I’m looking to get 4 new tyres for my 2019 Seat Leon ST, plus a 4 wheel alignment in the hope it will cure the ‘feathering’ and associated droning noise from the rear.

When browsing for tyres online I’ve noticed that you seem to be able to by tyres specified for a vehicle brand. For example, I’m looking at Goodyear Eagle F1 Assy 6… but there are three different options and different prices. One says ‘suited for Audi’ another ‘suited for VW’ and another ‘electric vehicle approved’. Does it matter? Are they different?

I want something decent but not a fortune - just a general commuter bus so not going mad. Suggestions welcomed.

Also, I’m struggling to find a Hunter alignment centre near me in Swansea. Would your ‘normal’ alignment be that much different?

Hunter is just the brand of alignment equipment, usually found in main dealers. If you go to most national tyre places they will offer an alignment service.

I don't know of any down Swansea way but John Dolbear in Cardiff have great alignment equipment and the staff there are nerds with knowing how to use their tools and equipment so they know their stuff.

I have used the Goodyear Eagle F1 Assy 5 AO (Audi approval) as they were the same price as the standard Assy 5 but with better rolling resistance.

Have been good tyres and lasting well.

From my experience I wish you well with the 4 wheel alignment, very rare to find a company that can do this correctly so unless the tyres are scrubbing badly and considering our potholes save you money until you feel it really needs adjustment.

Your droning noise may just be old harder rubber tyres which is why its recommended to always fit newer tyres to the same axel ie to the rear & move the rears to the front.

Other equipment is also if not better then Hunter, its also down to the Tech. using it..

Just to touch on this with my own experience. I rotated my tyres putting the old tyres on the front. Then got strange droning noises at low speed only. Cured by replacing the old front tyres (they were cheap chinese crap from the previous owner). I got alignment done too but they said afterwards that the alignment was almost perfect, oh well.

Asymmetric 6 are great, have them fitted to my car. They were the best mix of not too expensive, relatively long life, high performance tyre I could find.

Thanks for all the replies. The rear tyres are cheap crap the garage I bought it from fitted, so maybe that’s something to do with it. MOT is coming up soon so I plan on having the alignment done along with four new decent tyres. Will check back in and let you all know if it cures it!

I didn't notice any noise from my cheapo tyres until I moved them to the front. Tyres were nearly 5 years old too
