Brake Light Issue - Loss of power

Hi Guys/Gals,

Seem to have come up with a strange problem on my LC 180. Recently the brake light bulb went on the drivers side so last weekend got round to changing it.

Changed it, and now if im driving along and turn the headlight lights on, i suddenly loose power. If i press the accelerator nothing happens, the only way to get the accelerator working is to take the car out of gear and put it back in.

Ive also noticed, when im park up, keys out of the ignition, if i press the brakes, the car beeps. It seems to think i have the sidelights on whenever i hit the brake pedal. Finally, when i have the car on, if i turn the sidelights on, all 3 rear brake lights come on and stay on.

In other words, the car seems to think i am braking when i turn the side/headlights on. Probably explains why i loose power suddenly. Strange thing is if i take the bulb out all work fine. Its definitely not the bulb as i tried a working bulb from the passenger side and still got the same issue. Definitely a sensor/switch which is dodgy.

I'm currently driving around with no brake light bulb on the drivers side, all is working fine however i cant keep it up for too long. Need to get the brake light working asap. Any ideas what it could be? I also change the bulb holder thinking that was the issue, turned out problem still exists.

Do you have the correct bulbs fitted? Check both sides!
It should be a combined brake/tail light bulb, so 2 pins(connections) on the bottom of the bulb.
If you fit a single pin bulb, it will do as you describe.

Hi Sprogpole,

checked the bulb, no luck. Also removed the bulb from the working side and fitted to drivers side but still the same issue.

Have got a new problem now, rear lights don't work at all  Reverse lights and rear fogs work fine, but the rear tail-lamps don't even light up. Explains why some white man van was proper flashing me earlier today!

I have a feeling this is something to do with a sensor of some sort. Any ideas? Brake light switch/sensor?

Are you front side lights working? If not then defo a fuse, are you sure your putting the bulb in the right way, the pins on the side of the bulb are off set, so should on go in 1 way but I have come across before when there in the wrong way, I test the brake light switch aswell
