LOL  , thats a classic! sorry to hear about your near death experience rash!

...sorry mr policeman, the cause of the crash wasn't due to me sending a text on my mobile phone, but i was trying to avoid a flying chrome grille surround, after it propelled itself out of my dash without warning!!

...don't be so tight, you only have to fit these chrome surrounds once, and yours sound like they are wedged in solid, so the official Tool you have, now has no use? I don't mind paying for package and postage? ;) :p

When I bought my car I asked about having the chrome rings fitted as part of the deal but the salesman said thay they wouldn't fit them any more as they had had problems with them popping off in hot weather.

I bought some later and carefully fitted them myself and, touch wood, they have stayed on for two and a half years.

I can see that dealers wouldn't be too keen on fitting them as a freeby as they are a bit fiddly to do.

maybe i just fluked it then!
Mine are in solid, they make a hefty click when you snap the ring onto the vent unit. Dont see why hot weather makes a difference (stinks of dealer b.s. to me) because when driving surely your car will be cooler in the summer than in the winter (gotta love climate control!)

I think that's the secret. When I fitted mine I found that if you got both bits in exactly the right place they clicked together solidly. If they were not quite correctly aligned they looked all right but if you touched them they sprang apart again. I don't think the dealers can be arsed to fiddle around getting the right position.:)

If the instructions could make it a bit clearer to tell you exactly where to apply pressure to remove the original rings the rest of the job is easy.
