bloody annoying noise

is it like you can hear the engine as you pull off through the speakers? like feedback?

That would be as said above poor grounding, and the noise you are getting is alternator whine through the speakers. You can get a grouind supressor (i think thats the correct name) for about £12 that plugs into the back of the HU from halfords or similar

yeah but for it to happen in the first place there must be a bad earth so using a ground supressor might fix the stereo however there is a earth problem which will cause trouble with other things. So buying it is just masking another problem...

I know thats why i said there is a bad ground as you mentioned above and the noise would be the alternator whining and giving feedback through the stereo. So the poor ground is more than likely on the alternator.

I had a similar issue once (sounded like the engine note was being played through the speakers but more of a buzzing sound) and apparently a loose spark plug was the cause.

I can't understand that myself but that's what they (dealership) told me.
A bad earth sounds more likely.
