Haven't been on for a while (seems I only ever come on with questions, how rude!) but I'm back again to probe your collective brains.

My Toledo V5 came with only one key and unfortunately this one key just so happens to be a non RCL key. I've read up on the reprogramming guides, very useful btw, and I'm thinking about buying a new fob. Thing is though I was thinking to be on the safe side whether it would be worth me getting the key "cloned" first just in case I bugger up the only chip I have whilst trying to set up the RCL key.
Trouble is I can't find any threads on whether the Seat key can be cloned, has anyone had theirs done before?

On another subject I'm looking at changing the Headunit. It's the first-gen sat nav with the 6 disc changer. Thing is I still have a touchscreen DVD headunit that I had from a previous car, unfortunately it is a single DIN unit. I'm in two minds as to what to do, sell both headunits and use the cash to go towards a decent double DIN or just get my old single DIN unilt installed and buy the necessary blank off plates etc...

Would a new double din unit drop straight in? I guess it'd be a lot of hassle to sort putting the single din unit I already have in...

Any help would be much appreciated.

I had my key copied very easily by a place in Coventry called Eyden locksmiths (I think?), since you're not far away I might suggest a short diversion to there? They actually took the key code from either the key or from VAGCOM, and it worked fine. If you only have one key I would suggest you start there before messing around with recoding and other things.

The double DIN hole left by the radio seems to be pretty standard, there's no peculiar fittings that might make another double DIN unit difficult to fit. But I've used one of those blanking plates on my girlfriends Almera, and they are actually quite effective. The sat nav units from these cars are quite valuable though, have a look at how much they get on Ebay and decide what to do.

Cheers for that.

I thought that would be the safest way to get an RCL key without risking the chip in the original. I'll have a look at those guys, would somewhere like timpsons do something similar?

I can't seem to find any of the Nav units on ebay to figure out how much I'd get for mine, I can't remember the model number in particular. If I did go for a new double din am I right to assume that I won't need a different surround to the standard fit one?

I think the most cost effective thing to do would be sell both the Seat Nav unit and my touchscreen dvd unit and put the proceeds towards a new double din... but that depends on how much the standard Seat unit is worth. Perhaps if I include the 6 disc changer too?

So many questions!!

You need a proper automotive locksmith, unless Timpsons actually advertise being able to do car key recoding they won't be able to do the full job. They might be able to cut a key from a blank, but anyone can do that, its the recoding that you need the specialist for. And Eyden were recommended to me by an independent VAG dealer in Coventry as a good place to get a realistically priced key copy. This might be blatantly obvious, but you do need to take your car as well as the key when you get it done! They take it round the back, get the code out then cut the key and put the code into it.

Don't forget that unit is not specific to Seat, a few VAG cars used them. They just had a different boot up screen to differentiate them. Certainly with the 6 disc changer it would be worth a bit, but seperately it might do just as well.

Personally I'd stick with the single DIN and the blanking plate, that way if you come to sell the car you can just put the standard Seat stuff back in and keep your current unit. Again, with my girlfriends car we still have the stock Almera head unit and will be replacing it when it comes to sell it.

See I thought that would be the case with them, any idea on a price?

The main reason I ask about Timpsons in particular is that a few years back I had a Fiat key coded (or cloned) there. Literally was just a copy of the code in the original key. Although I gues that the immobiliser system in the Toledo may be a bit more complicated than that...

I'll have another look on teabay in a sec.
That is a good point as I would prefer to keep the original for when I sell the car.
Trouble is that I've searched on here and can only find advice on going from a single DIN to a double rather than the other way around and looking at that it seems the mounts are different and it might be an utter pain in the arse to sort.:(

The touchscreen HU single Din unit I have can also be a bit of an arse to fit (i've done it before) mainly because of it's main control box being a seperate unit.
I'm just being a lazy bugger really, I want the easiest thing to fit for the least amount of outlay/effort...don't ask for much eh? :duck:

I'd have thought going from a single to a double is way more work than 'tother way round, I was thinking you just use one of the fairly bog standard blanking plates and mount the radio to it? The plates usually come with enough of a lip to fix the single DIN unit to, and they do fit quite nicely. So it doesn't matter what the Tolly mounts are like, its more to do with what the blanking plate offers?

If you have any doubts, get yourself to an ICE shop with your unit and ask them to demonstrate how your unit will mount in the blanking plate?

As for the control box, if it needs to be behind the dash there's plenty of room where the double DIN unit used to be. If it's something that is controlled by you, you could follow my preference. I've put my MP3 player connector above the ashtray and it works quite well. Well, it might not if I smoked...

My key was £65 I think, for a bog standard key that could undo the locks and start the car. Their central locking keys with the buttons on the fob were a little more, and the flip keys were even more. Its still less than the hundred or so squid and the six week lead time that the Seat dealer quoted me!!

See the thing is I can find both single din and double din adapters but none of the ones i've found have a blanking plate. I'm guessing this isn't a common conversion as most people would change their double din for another double din rather than converting to a single din as mine would be.

The seperate control box is a bit on the large side from memory (quite a bit bigger than the headunit itself) and it's dimentions mean that it generally gets hidden away behind the glovebox or elswhere behind the dash wherever there's room.

I'm a bit stumped really. What I need is something like this:
(Edit:GRR won't let me post a pic until I get to 15 posts....)
But for my mk2 tolly instead of the mk3 (I can find them for the mk 3 but that's no help at all :headhurt: )

Sounds like a fair price for the key though. Definitely going to have to invest in that soon, I'm not liking only having one key for the car...makes me nervous lol
