Mobil 1 ESP quietened down my FR Tdi for sure. I believe Castrol Edge 507 is slightly more viscous than ESP but both are great TBH
I think I'm right in saying...
507 is a newer spec oil and is suitable for long life service intervals on PD's and is compatible with DPF engines (5w 30)
505.01 is for fixed service intervals on PD's without DPF (5W 40)
Have a look on Opie Oils website. If in any doubt as to suitability send Opie Oils an email...they'd be pleased to help I'm sure.
Here's Mobil's website which has a 'what oil for my car' option.
From my own experience my engine runs a treat on ESP and quite a bit better than on Millers XFE-PD 505.01 maybe because ESP is fully synthetic? I don't know but it just does![]()
Sorry for the delayed reply I only just saw your post.mine is the mk1 tdi leon without dpf and Opie still say 5/30w , seat told me today DPF engines need 5/40w which i thought and read they need 5/30wthen i read that on the castrol site saying Pd engines need 5/40w which can mean all Pd engines.
this is getting a bit silly i can tell you,
what a fixed interval? is not the oil change every 10k.
Nowould this oil be suitable for a standard tdi 1.9 Sport. Ford formula F Synthetic oil (WSS-M2c913-C/B/A. ACEA A1/B1 by the price!! it should be, but i would like to be sure

Your saying Seat state DPF's need 5w-40 sounds a bit weird to me. 507 which is DPF compatible isn't 507 without it being 5w-30
The easy answer is both 505.01 and 507 are good choices.
Arguably 5w-40 505.01 has a wider level of protection than 5w-30 - however 507 is to a standard which VW reckon is good for extended service long life oil changes...so I kind of believe it to be of a higher/newer spec than 505.01...I might be wrong though505.01 must be changed at 10,000 miles or sooner whereas 507 can go on quite a lot longer.
On an American TDi forum they have oil discussion threads which are seriously long...just arguing about which oil is best for PD's. A lot argue that 5w-40 Mobil Turbo Diesel Truck is the best oil for VW PD engines - but it aint 505.01 or 507 rated by VW so your warranty would be voided. The more I looked for an answer the more questions were raised so I gave in and just got some 507 Mobil ESP cheap at Asda. I'm happy to be using a top spec oil and it'll do for me.
It's funny that the Mobil site says ESP 5w30 for the PD...and Castrol say 5w40no worrys mate, no the Castol site says 5-40 for the Pd engine,
but what i got in the end was 5-30w oil due to Low ash , what i mean is the the lower the high rate the lower the ash i.e i got 5-30 over 5-40, the DPF does not matter to me as i have a MK1 tdi leon PD engine , but if i ever got a DPF filter engine then it still would be the lower 30w rate oil , thing is you have to look in america they have a hotter Climate in summer ect in uk were not the same Climate, so the 30w oil would be a better option.
I used to be quite the Millers fan but after using XFE-PD I wasn't too keen TBH. I put it down to it only being a Semi Synthetic and decided to use Quantum Platinum 505.01 fully synthetic after that. As it happened I then found some ESP for a great price at Asda and bought a load of it so that was problem solved. Comparing ESP to XFE-PD my engine sounds smoother.SO far in my pd 150 I've had;
Castrol Edge - OK
Millers XFE-PD - Noticably smoother
and I have just had some Fuchs Pro S 5w-40 put in, which it is the best by far - smoother than the Millers. It's not officially a PD oil but am reliably informed that it far surpasses the PD requirements....bloody expensive though!
