Best bike rack for Leon FR

Hi I am going to take delivery of my Leon FR in the next couple of weeks, I am looking to get a bike rack so would appreciate any advice on the best one to get.

Would it be worth fitting a towbar and fit a bike rack on that?

Cheers
Adam

I've only ever used one of those precarious "strapped to the boot door" ones and only ever on the missus' company car. I've heard the roof rack ones are much more stable/reliable but you'd need to invest in the roof rack attachments, bars, etc before you could buy the bike rack itself, so it makes it expensive depending on how often you're going to use it. Same goes for the tow bar... it's a better solution but pricey unless you're going to use it for some other towing. Hmm.

in the boot for me I'm afraid - on the roof ruins the fuel economy and on the boot ends up scratching the paintwork. Plus I've heard of more than one person being followed home with bikes on the roof and being relieved of their bikes shortly after!

Thanks for the advice, I was thinking of getting one of the Saris Bones racks, however maybe putting the bikes in the boot is a better option.

I've got 3 Atera roof mounted cycle carriers. Does the job but fuel consumption does take a bit of a hit :D Saw a boot mounted carrier plus 3 bikes drop off the back of a Renault Scenic on the A1 once....bikes looked distinctly s/h after they had been run over by a few 44 tonne artics :D

mate has one - they're well made but some fuss suspension bikes are a struggle to get on it!

Sorry to ask the same question again, but I need a way to transport my bike easily over short distances.

I've bought a new bike that's got wider handlebars and a longer front fork than my old one. That could just about fit into the boot with everything removed, but with my new bike, it's a real struggle, & the plastic trim on the bootlid is getting scuffed. It's also a pain to have to empty the boot every time, so a quick hour on the bike becomes either a major hassle (meaning I don't bother), or a cycle around the same paths again (meaning I get bored and don't bother).

Without a tow bar, my options appear to be:
1) roof bars and a bike carrier (£140 for the roof bars from Seat + £30-60 for the cycle carrier, or
2) a rear boot lid carrier.

I suppose the advantage with 1) is that I'd have a set of roof bars for other things. For the boot lid, what about this one for £40?

Go for roof bars mate. They're so much better. I bought a bike rack for the back of the car and it was ****. So wobbly.

Roof bars are better

Thats why you should have something heavy and made out of metal under your drivers seat ;)

I've got that one for short journeys (especially if the bike is filthy)

Doesn't move at all, though I take the wheels out & toe strap the crank to the rack to stop it hitting the paint.

You can get it cheaper at wiggle or ebay though.

I've got the roof bars and 2 bike carriers and although the roof bars are not the correct ones for the Leon they do the job and having the bikes on the roof means I can still access the boot. If you are only doing a short distance then fuel ecconomy won't be a huge issue. Personnally, I'm after the correct Leon roof mounts and just attach my bars to them for peace of mind as the old mounts are for my old Lexus.

On my Leon FR I currently use Thule roof rack and bike carriers. Went with Thule as you can resell the bits easily when you change car or adapt it easily to new car. On eBay they go for almost as much as new, especially if you sell all bits separately, e.g. the bars, footpack and fitting kit.

Came across this thread as I was thinking about going to a towbar and a bike carrier.... that's seems a very pricey option though.

Easy to fit two bikes in the boot (after removing the front wheels)

Simple, Cheap and very unlikely to fall out.

Managed to get three MTBs and 3 people in the back. TETRIS KING!
