BBZ Engine Wear Advice

Hi Everyone

My mate's looking to buy his first car, but he wants something European with less than 100k on the clock and younger than 6yrs (not exactly straightforward for less than £3k!). Anyway, I've found an 08 Ibiza with the 1.4 BBZ engine. It's got a solid service history and looks in good nick but it's done 95k miles. Is the engine likely to be knackered after that distance, or do the BBZs generally last quite well?

I know almost nothing about these cars to be honest, so all help is greatly appreciated.

Just for reference I got my 08 1.2 with 41k on the clock for less than 3k (not much less).

Over in Northern Ireland where prices tend to be a little higher.

The Mk4 1.4s are bullet proof and with it's yearly service the engine will outlast the rest of the car. Just check the timing belt mileage as it's ideally every 40k/4 yrs and is relatively expensive to replace compared to other cars. I was getting quotes of £300+. (Eventually got a mate to do it for £200).

Check the front tyres for uneven wear as it may indicate the front console bushes have given up. Common as they are made of butter. Can be changed for cupra ones which will last a lot longer.

Also check front arches for rust. An '08 might be ok in this area but some genius decided to install foam behind the arches, which soaks up water and eats away the wing.

Apart from that, they're good solid cars.

@bert682: Good to know what sort of prices similar vehicles are selling for. I've had a look around and reckon the car I have in mind is competitively priced for our region.

Hi I have a 57 bbz engine and its on 97000. Still runs fine and not bad on petrol. Just as they have said already. Just keep it serviced and it will be fine.
