bad transmission whine :(

ok, i have a wee problem, on the way hoem the otherday my car developed a pretty loud whine when u lift off and coast. its had a slight whine since i had it, but its suddenly got alot worse, to add ot that i can smell that horrible dirty oil smell usualy associated with gear oil....
got under it today and the back of the sump and upp and around that area is covered in oil, not a mojor amount and whilst it is dripping ont he drive its only a very small amount. now to add to this. my clutch is makign a whiring noise when its not engaged, as soon as you push it down past the biting point it goes.
does anybody knwo what the problem might be?
im guessign the clutch noicse could be the throw out bearing.
does the whining sound liek it might be the cv joints? it seems to be comign more from the passenger side of the car.

Its got a leak, so youll smell it... this making the oil level too low would cause noise/whine.. as for the clutch, the oil maybe leaking inside the bell housing onto the clutch... if its leaking from somewhere else then suspected clutch noise is the release bearing. Id say get the box out change the clutch and bearing, find the leak its likely to be either input shaft seal, or diffoutput seals. Sort that, new oil to level. Get the box back in jobs a good un for a few years and miles.

thanks mate. after asking about a bit, im pretty certain the noise is the clutch bearing so not to big a jobbie should have it done within the week. gives me a chance to get the bumpers off and re fibreglasses, sanded and painted whilst its off the road too

Are you getting any knocking back through the clutch pedal? Normally a tell tale sign of thrust bearing failure

Mine has been doing this ever since I bought the car 15k ago, and has only got slightly worse. The oil level is correct, as I have checked it a few times. I just put it down to worn main shaft bearing, as it goes into all gears fine. I just ignore it.

well asked the mechanic i usualy use today and he jsut said sound slike ur box has gone blah blah blah, which is basicly an excuse as he doesnt want to work on my car. so balls to that i will do it myself.
from what peopel have said and experiance with my landrover, i think it is a case of a seal has gone, lost a load of the oil causing the bearing to run dry hence the loud high pitch whining when i coast etc.
so i will start work on it this weekend, whilst im at it i will probably change the clutch too as its getting on a bit and i may aswell do it all at once to save future hassle.
has anyone got any advise when it comes to this lot? ive only ever really done this stuff on my landrover, changed hub seals etc.
i know im goign to need a clutch alignment tool, which im pretty sure my mate will have. btu what is the easiest way to go about this? the front bumper will be off as i will use this time as a chance to re-fibreglass that so would it be easier to remove athe rad etc to give me plenty of room to work?
or can i just get it up on axle stands and do it from underneith?

p.s i havnt been gettign any knocking back through the clutch pedal although a while ago it did suddenly loose a fair amoutn of travel so the bighting poitn was down by the floor, so i adjsuted the cable and it was fien from then on.
it select all gears fine, except it crunches a little when i put it into rever, but it always has and so did my last ibiza.
although saying that, since all this has happened it doesnt seem to crunch when it goes into reverse now :S

taking it out to change the clutch and bearing, then whatever seal is leaking, then hopefully puttign it all back together again.

I can hardly believe this, but my gearbox died completely today. It only drives in 1st and 2nd, and makes a hellsih noise. Spoke too soon about just leaving it lol. Jon

gutted mate should be able to pick one up second hand fairly easy though. bound to be a few in the scrappies, if not try ebay.
if mine is gone, which im 90% certain it hasnt, i have my old. 1.0 ibiza still sitting on the drive waiting to be put back together so i can flog it. but its a bit too good to just salvage for parts really
