There's something in the Owners handbook about putting them where the car jack locates on the sill or next to this position, using blocks with a groove cut in them so the weight is bearing on the sill and not on the seam.
I have done this using wooden blocks but I wasn't keen and they were more as a precaution and never actually took the full weight.
There must be a better place?

It depends on what you doing, i normally put mine under the engine cross member.

You have to be VERY carefull putting them under the chassis rails as you could run the risk of them slipping and going through the floor.

What I'd say is if useing the chassis rails as a jacking point, see if you can find a double layered point near the front of the car as this will be stronger, but be very carefull and use some wooden blocks also i use a trolley jack under the engine cross member as an additional support.

If you have any doubts about useing chassis rails to jack or support a car don't do it is my advice.

cheers for your replys guys, i jacked the car up using the car jack and then positioned the axle stands on one of the main bolts that bolt the sub-frame to the bottom of the car, found it on a website, they had a video of a bloke jacking up a Ford mondeo on the same place.
