Like most of the people, i was quite disappointed with the standard sound system (non-Beats) that came with the Formentor, I lived with it for a number of months, and having come from Seat Sound, which was decent for what it was, this was OK, with no punch. Something needed to be done.

I decided to do things properly.

The standard paper cone speakers are always a weak point on any car. I decided to upgrade these to an aftermarket Mids/high package.

I used a relatively unknown brand called X-fire. To be honest I was quite impressed with them. They had demonstrated the JL C3 to me on a car and the a similar car with x-fire. In all honesty, there wasn’t much in it, other than cost.

I know that decent soundproofing in the doors will pay dividends. So we did this too.

I was going for a Match 5.4 DSP which I would have put under the seat, and run the sub from this amp too. However, my local retailer in London said yes, the Match is a good amp for its size, but with the room we have in the boot, we can do something different. So I went with the Phoenix Gold ZQA6.8 DSP Amplifier. Cost was an extra £75 for the bigger amp. It’s much more powerful too.

ZQA6.8 is a high-end amplifier and Digital Sound Processor offering amazing sound quality and adjustability to give me the sound quality I want.

Amp was placed under the boot cover and sits quite nicely there. There is a basic tune on the DSP, currently running the fronts on the amp and a subwoofer.

Only problem is have is that I didn’t have funds for the subwoofer… so we wait. Post Christmas issue…

Nice project you have here! I'am always surprised to discover how much effort and money it requires to solve those things.

In my Cupra Leon I also have the standard audio, which seems to be 110Watt Rms and the big problem of having a terrible mid range and a fast failing bass on even mediocre amplitudes. After a couple of years I also decided i had to do something about this. But i was not willing to pay incredible amounts for a marginal improvement.

My reasoning was to install an active subwoofer that would take off the strain from the standard drivers and have the 110W available to serve everything except the frequencies underneath 250Hz with an active sub.

Initially I was going for an underseat active sub, but apparently there is not enough space to install a sufficient decent one and I ended up with a Musway MW1000A which fits in the spare tire under the trunk. It has an decent 11inch woofer and 150W Rms/300W extra to add to the standard audio.

Certainly It solves the lack of deep bass, but like expected, it only partially solves the problem of the lacking midrange. Currently, it's a good enough solution which costed me ~700€ and I'am not willing to invest more.
