Hello,

My current car is a Ibiza FR 05 reg 1.8. I would like to install a new head unit, speakers, sub/amp. However I do not really know what the diff between a sub and amp is, this is a very grey area for me and I would appreciate advice from people who have gone this route, what they have in their cars and what would be suitable for use in my car.

Any help at all would be great

erm...

well a sub is a speaker (sub base) which will either be passive or active.

if the sub is passive ie not amplified then you will need an amp to power it as your head unit wont have the power to.

most people install new head units and subs etc to gain better quality and often louder sound, but everyone has their own requirements.

bear in mind however if you have on steering controls like me you have to get the right adaptors to use them with a new head unit.

also if you want to hook up a sub you will need power in your boot too.

there are lots of car audio forums much like this, have a search.

a decent new stereo will totally change the way your standard speakers sound, i kept telling myself i'd need new speakers, but i got a powerful alpine head unit and a small pioneer sub which sits deep in the passenger footwell, it's totally changed the sound without losing any boot space... i'm sure i'll blow the standard speakers one day but they're fine for now!!

Welcome ibizafrcjs, this is a route i have been down twice in my two ibiza's from totally standard to different everything, new hu,speakers, amps, subs etc.. well depends on your budget on what you can achive first step would be to change the standard headunit.. then change the speakers then if you still want more then amps (one for the speakers and one for the sub or one for both) and sub, but if you do these then it will make your car slower like i found out...

and don't go to halfords either, i bought mine there and stupidly le tthem fit. when i went to a specialist about the sub he called me up to say it had been set up all wrong - apparently it wasn't running at full power as it has to be connected directly to the battery. when he'd finished the stereo sounded AMAZING.

definitely worth a trip to a specialist

^ surely any amp needs realli to be connected to mains! nice 4 gauge wire normally does the job :D

Contemplating getting a sub in my car too, although i dont fancy the loss in boot space!
