Evening lads, not been on here for ages. I used to have an 03 plate cupra r monster but that got sold to a friend and several cars later I now own a boggo 55 plate fr. I bought it pretty cheap and it’s got a few niggles which I was aware of, including a boost leak, I managed to drive it 250 miles home with this leak as it wasn’t really that savage but I had a bit of free time this weekend and decided to sort it out. This is where it starts getting fun.

Whipped the bumper off and with the last bolt undone it popped off under a bit of pressure, I was like ‘fantastic, what’s its baulked up against to do that’, long story short it’s had a bit of a shunt, unrecorded of course, no damage to the chassis legs or anything severe but a bit of a twist in the a/c and coolant rad, and a load of cable ties holding pipes up etc. So I chopped it all out and let it hang loose and low and behold I found a small pipe about 4 inches long at the very front split, more than likely from the impact or originally from that and it got worse over time, either way, it suddenly dawned on me that there was a problem, the car was light 1 x intercooler! It’s just pipework, followed by pipework, followed by more pipework. So I’m after a pic of the standard pipework and how it routed, including the elusive intercooler and how it mounts as it looks like I’m gonna have to get all new pipework as what’s on it looks pretty billybob. I’d rather go down the standard route as I’m taking a break from modified cars atm, just sold my golf with all the toys on it and got an old lupo gti sat in the garage that’s doing nothing but catching cobwebs right now.

Any help would be fantastic, so yeah, thanks!

Pete

Cheers, this shows it as if the intercooler is a side mount but really the 150 TFI has a slim front mount (as if I have to tell you that )

Well I’m glad you did as I DIDNT know that, haha! As I say, mine just consists of bodged pipework so I didn’t know if was supposed to have 1/2 side intercoolers or a fmic. I assume where the intercooler was is where there is a long metal pipe which runs along the bottom of the a/c rad then!

Nah that sounds well botched!!!
From the turbo there is a RED hose, connects to metal ‘pancake pipe’ behind drivers wheel then to a BLACK hose into the intercooler (bottom left looking at the front of intercooler). Out the bottom right of intercooler, a BLACK hose connects to plastic hard pipe which routes up and around the oil filter then up to a BLACK hose which fits into EGR valve.

Mine is fine down to the pancake pipe but that’s when it goes a bit wrong, goes to a black plastic pipe that bends around the front of the slam panel, goes to a short black hose - the hose that split, then a long alloy pipe that goes along the panel and then the opposing pipe that goes back round and up to the egr. Strange!

Not so good mate, sounds like you don’t have an intercooler - why would someone do a stupid thing like that, a turbo’d engine needs one

Yeah I’d imagine it was a bodge job to get it mobile and sold on quick, it’s surprisingly responsive considering but I know when it warms up it’ll be a bit tragic! I’m struggling to find any slim ‘oem’ intercoolers though.

Right, I’ve managed to get to the bottom of this I reckon, just waiting to take delivery of a full slam panel with all the rads and intercooler, the lad is even chucking in a couple of the pipes that were originally chopped up, so happy days hopefully, just need a set of twin fans now as the ones on mine have a single fan. It seems that after the shunt the other owner had just fitted a standard non turbo set of rads/fans.

So new slam panel, new rads, new fixings and we should be on our way to the front end being sorted!

Thanks for your help gents.
