My 06 2.0TDi Sport averages 50mpg. However my work entails that I do a lot of repeat journies (120 miles, a-road, motorway, traffic queues etc). What I have noticed is that if I drive hard for the first 2-3 miles then settle down to cruise at 70mph I get better fuel consumption for the same journey than if I drive gently at the start. The difference can be as much as 7/8 mpg for a typical journey as outlined above.

Anybody else noticed this?

Thats funny. I noticed that at least 2-3 times.

I drove really hard then got to work and had averaged about 5mpg more than if I had gone on a sunday drive.

It doesnt do it all the time, just now and again, I cant work it out either

But driving a car hard with a cold engine doesnt do it much good

Is it because you are driving it harder whcih will mean the engine doesnt take as long to warm up so its then using less fuel?

Possibly - but I also noticed it yesterday when about 80 miles into my return journey (and averaging 55mpg) I got stuck in roadworks for 3 miles at 25mph. When I cleared the roadworks I resumed my cruise at 70mph but the average mpg just continued to drop and only showed 51mpg by the time the journey was complete. It was almost as if the engine had got 'clogged-up' in the roadworks.
