Alternator Squealing - advice needed

Hi all,

My car started making some squealing noises last week, so got my friend who's a mechanic to look at it. He said I need a new alternator pulley and a new fan belt.

I've been to a local parts store and asked them for these things, but they said they can't find them on their system, but they've got a 'drive belt tensioner' and a 'fan drive belt'....are these the same thing? I've noticed there are lots of names for different belts so now I'm confused.

They are ready to order and I need the right parts asap but I didn't want to order the wrong parts, can someone advise me please?

Many Thanks,

Will.

Drive belt tensioner is on the cambelt, so no its not the alternator pulley.

They pulley it self shouldn't fail, more likely the bearing in the alternator

I looked into this recently. The alternator pulley is located on the end of the alternator (unsurprisingly), whereas the drive belt tensioner is bolter on to the engine block.

The alternator pulley problem is common with VAG 1.9 PD TDIs. So common, my mum's Audi A6 and my dad's VW T5 have both had them replaced.

A new part from the dealer should cost something like £60+VAT. Try asking Dave at SERE Motors on here if you haven't already.

In addition I've found EuroCarParts very helpful in the past, try looking for a local one in your area if you're struggling.

Anyway, the drive belt tensioner is certainly not the alternator pulley.

If possible, have your mechanic mate do the work, sounds like he knows what he's doing.

Thanks for all the help everyone - managed to get the alternator pulley and fan belt for £50 inc. VAT, and got my mate to fit it so owe him a few beers at least!

No funny noises now so engine sounds and feels much more solid.

Thanks again for the help.
