One of the rear wheel bearings is on its way out on the Altea, It went in to the dealers Tuesday to have both sides replaced but seems they discovered that they did not have necessary tool to remove them!!! Has anyone carried out this Job and knows what tool is neccesary. They have advised that they are sourcing a tool but day 3 and still no tool , just a real pain driving with a constant Drone.......:(

Any advice appreciated.

That sounds like some bollox to me. I took my Altea into the local garage just round the corner from me for a wheel bearing on the rear. The guy there swore blind it wasn't noisy but I knew it was and made him change it anyway. He agreed when it came off that it was noisy. He's just a small local garage and he had the tool to do it. He did say that he'd bought it a few months previously when a similar car came in with a wheel bearing gone, but it was available to buy from somewhere local.

Sounds like the dealers are full of something. Usual franchise dealerships are required to have the tools to carry out all maintenance on Group cars. I wonder why they don't have them.

Have you asked why?

Wheel Bearing

Not clear why they have not got one,
I booked the car in when I discovred a low droaning from about 30-50mph then it seemed to get lost in road noise.
I suspected a wheel bearing, and when I booked it in I told them I thought it was a bearing issue.
and on taking it down they Road Tested and said it was one of the rear bearings.... (didnt have any issues with getting both sides replaced as car is nearly on 90K)
They then ordered up 'wheel bearing replacement kits' for both sides, (may include hubs i'm not clear on that), Ive just had New Disks and Pads fitted, it was all part of the same one job I asked to be carried out and the Labour charges were reduced down due to the fact they had to strip down to get to the bearing. Now the brakes are complete, of course these are going to have to come back off again to get to the bearing (they will have to bear the loss for that). I'm kind of praying that the tool is available tomorrow? I honestly expected VAG group cars, VW/SKODA/SEAT to have the same bearings? It is a SEAT Dealer and I have not had any previous issues with them with all levels of service really good. They have carried out services from 20K to 80K so thats 7 in total.....
Now reached the stage where I need this Job doing so am keeping options open on what todo next.........

Did you buy genuine wheel bearing from Seat Parts Dealer?

Hello mate,

can't see why they would need special tools, most well equipped garages should have a press and pre-cast press attachments. If not then a ggod mechanic will have a supply of drifts and punches to knock the old one out.... once the old one is out then the old one can be used as a guide to push in the new one.

i have done many a bearing on cars in the past.

The rear hubs on an Altea need a special tool to remove them. The hub assembly is a one piece part with the bearing inserted already, and you can't buy just the bearing. So the tool required is a special socket of some description to remove the hub nut.

Edit: Yes, a genuine Seat part was used.

Wheel Bearing

Yes, that was the impression I got when discussing the work with the parts guy, the bearing was pre factory pressed in to the Hub assembly, the reason I believe for this is to avoid any potential damage when fitting a new bearing (minimises the risk of the causing damage when pressing a bearing in as it has already been pre-done).
Do you remember what you paid for the assembly.....?

It must be the tool to remove the hub that they need?

cadman 2k....

if you log onto Euro car parts, and entire your reg, then under transmission and hubs, it should show an image of the part. having seen the image, the hub comes complete and with a new retaining bolt. It appears to be a internal 12 sided tool to remove the nut.....

I am unable to place image on forum as I am such a newbie....

Hope it helps .....

Yeah its a big ass M16 spline iirc and needs to be done up to something silly like 150 nm plus 180 degrees, I can check tomorrow on the spec but I have to use a scaffold bar to get the degrees..lol

I just wanted to add to this thread that it is M18 for the hub nut. You will also need a M14 XZN tool for the break calipers (At least on a 2005 Altea 1.9Tdi) which you will need to remove in order to get the disk off!
