Granted I'm never going to get over 50MPG but am struggling to even get 40MPG on a motorway trip at a steady 80mph?!

A little closer to the manufacturer's 45.6 combined mpg would be nice.

I had our A2 TDi supperchipped and as well as the obvious performance gains, I noted a marked improvement in MPG so just wondered if anyone has had their Altea or Leon TDi 170BHP chipped and if so, if they witnessed any fuel gain, Superchips themselves are claiming an average 3-4 mpg gain.

If you go down the De-DPF and Remap route

50-60mpg is reality

You could get a Remap done so improve MPG at the expense of BHP but a standard Remap will see slightly better figures

thanks for the info Andrew, not sure I want to lose power but I appreciate you cant have it all. I have managed about 41MPG on a long run now so if I was to get it chipped then I'd be nigh on the manufacturer's claim so I can't really grumble.

it's the PD170 ('57 plate) – On a separate note I see the new CR version has a very low CO2 output, in fact lower than the 140 model, got to say the £175 per year road tax is a far cry from our A2's £35 ouch!

Given some of the issues that have been noted with the DPF, I'd be tempted to stay at OEM and give a remap a miss until someone comes up with a definitive solution.

Best solution for now is to put an aftermarket panel filter in to remove the asthmatic breathing, keep it serviced on the nail, and ensure tyres are at right pressure. Best you can do really.

I would scrap the DPF and get it mapped to 220-230 bhp.
@Warren Cox Why do you say the PD170 has "asthmatic breathing" for and if it did fitting an after market panel filter will make no difference as a clean paper filter will flow just as good as any after market filter. The stock airfilter system can flow more then enough air for any stock or remapped PD170 needs.

I don't think that the OP is looking to go for outright power in this instance. If a remap had delivered better MPG for him, I think it would have been an acceptable option. From reading this, and another of his posts I think chopping out DPF's is an unlikely solution.

The asthmatic breathing comment isn't levied at the PD170, I just tend to find that when you stick a paper filter back in a car they feel a bit asthmatic whatever the car you put it in.
