Airbag warning light

Hello all… Apologies up front for jumping on the forum and asking a question straight up. I usually like to have a read around and see what I can find first.

So tonight I completed my purchase of a 71 plate curpra Leon estate and I noticed a little orange airbag light on in the top RHS of the dash as I sat on the M6 in a jam trying to 1. Figure out the radio to get it off some god awful channel and 2. Turn the temp down!

Got home and when you start the car it comes up with a warning error. It did this when I test drove the car and I got given a bit of a fob off saying it can happen when a battery goes flat and "they’ll get they guys to turn it off". I’m guessing they either didn’t or whatever it is is more than just a flat battery at some point.

before I call the car place tm and invoke the measly warranty it comes with my questions are is this common, if The battery does go flat can this happen or was that a fob off and what should I know about these issues?
is there a simple way to reset and im just being a bit distrusting and paranoid.
thanks all

@Dfx_123 - No, I don’t think you’re just being a bit distrusting or paranoid; aside from the radio and air con temperature issues, an illuminated airbag warning light indicates there’s a potential safety issue with the airbag system and that could compromise the safety of the vehicle occupants. If the place you purchased the car from is merely going to “get the guys to turn it off“ (i.e. the airbag warning light), then IMHO that’s totally unacceptable. It could be argued that if the airbag system is faulty, then the car is unroadworthy and aside from the safety issues, using an unroadworthy car on the public roads is also likely to invalidate your insurance (most - if not all - car insurance policies will have a requirement in the small print for the car to be maintained in a roadworthy condition at all times).

In the UK, Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 a car has to be of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose. If it’s not, then within the first 30 days of ownership you can highlight the issues to the seller and request a full refund from them (if they’re a garage rather than a private seller).
