Buy or borrow a digital thermometer; close the side vents; switch AC to coldest setting and stick the probe in the centre vent; if it's under 8c then it's working OK.

If your car is over 3 years old then you might want to think about getting it re-gassed as most cars lose about 10-15% of the gas per year.

Don't be tempted by the DIY "top-up" cans: if you don't know how much gas is in the system, you have no way of knowing if you are putting too much in; which could cause expensive damage!

i had this feeling about a month ago, took it to the garage i always go to and had it recheaged......iirc there should of been 525grammes of gas and there was abround 300grammes, so in my case £40 well spent :D

o and my car isnt 2 years old yet, alot of ppl make the mistake of not running it at all and then when it warms a bit put it on and not be cold enough, apparantly if you dont use it the gas evaporates quicker than if you were using it not sure on that though.

if there is a kwik fit near to you that may be your best bet as they say if they cant your air con colder you dont pay, cant get much fairer than that.

My air con is just over 2 years old, and it died about 3 weeks ago, I thought the worst, ie dead compressor, took it to GK's in Derby, turned out that a valve had broken, and I'd lost all gas pressure, they replaced the valve under warranty, regassed, and now I'm well chilled :D

My insurance company had made a mistake and over charged me as they missed that i had 3 years no claims and thought i had 2 so refunded me £45.

Treated car to a AC topup at Kwik Fit. They took out 420g of refrigerant and 3ml of oil and topped up with 525g and 13ml of oil. That represented a 20% loss of refrigerant.

AC was noticeably cooler as a result. I hate to think how bad it would be in 18 months time when its 3 years old and another 15k miles on it!

I did ask about that but he said that offer was off - probably cos its summer! All the signs were down too.

Im sure there is at least that, mind you 10% isnt much, it would be 10C air flow down to 9C. Didnt measure mine before or after.

I'll check in with the kwik fit boys around the corner from work tomorrow. My local stealers wanted £65+ at one and £90 at the other! The £90 did also include the cleaning of the pipes so no smells.
