Go for 18inch alloys
Decide a budget and then buy a decent set of dampers and lowering springs (aftermarket stuff is better than buying say Leon Cupra dampers)
Also, if the budget allows look into a set of anti-roll bars which will transform your car.....

This is based on the Leon Cupra R but you'll get the idea

mines got deep dish 17s and lowered with g-max coilovers ( 360 quid bargin ) whitch gives a great euro look which makes a nice change from the bigger is better brigade and also helpswith 0-60 times. Ill up load some pics in readers rides when i get her back from seat . But seariously go 4 coilovers ( even cheap ones rule) then at least youve got the option to adjust the ride hight yourself , and dont be scared its v easy
