Very strange - I never had any problems with the amount of space above the light. What method did you use to connect the wires - could these have shorted or are they well insulated?
Have you both sorted the problem where the plug from the W8 light pushes against the alarm sensor and doesn't fit flush. Thats probably the biggest pain in the ass fitting this.
I had this problem!, was terrible, in the end i simply cut the connector and all the pins off and soldered the wires onto the back of the circuit board where the pins once were, this let the light sit almost correctly, the only thing i have trouble with now is that one corner hangs down just a little bit. Its fine though, i dont think it will fall out.

Different to what I done. I cut all of the plastic away from around where the plug goes, then I bent the pins up so they pointed straight at the roof and just plugged it in again. As you can see from the pics it sits flush now. I did have to play around with the clips on the front of the light to get it in nice and tight.
I also broke one of the clips on the alarm sensor - nothing a dab of UHU didn't sort though.
I did think about cutting the housing and then bending the pins, no idea why i didnt choose that route in the end, its ok now anyway so i won't complain, not as if i wanna be doing it again if ever i change the car anyway.
