20v exhaust on a Mk2 questions!!

Hi all,

I've just picked up a mk3 20v exhaust back box for my mk2 and was wondering how I can tell its exact age! - is it possible by the part number/code?

Allegedly its done 42k so would there still be life in it? - theres no rust on it at all and its in excellent cond !!
Originally were these one peice from the Cat back! - this one has been joined half way between the centre box! - could this be a replacement?

Cheers

Help/advice would be appreciated!

It looks almost new by comparison to the standard exhaust on my car (rusty/dodgy welds/holes/split seam) which has only covered 6k more!!!

IIRC the standard system is 2 piece from the cat back. Personally I wouldn't have bothered buying one with plenty of miles on it but if it looks in decent condition and you feel you can decent mileage from it then go for it.

Cheers EDC,

If externaly its excellent whats the benefit of one with lesser miles? - would it be the build up of carbon inside or something?

Is there a date of manufacture stamp on the 20vt rear box at all?
My previous vw exhausts always had one!

My standard exhaust is now on its last legs and the 20vt did'nt cost much!
Fit or not to fit ! that is the question!

Images of its condition:

Stamped on the can under the part number is:

Bosal 11418 0904

I wonder if the later four digits relate to its date of manufacture! The same four digits on the original exheaust are 0299

I was thinking about replacing the centre box with a new 16v or 20v one to get the correct bore for the 20v back box(55mm). Standard the Cat into the centre appears to be 55mm and the pipe out of the centre is 50mm

Would this be a problem on the 8v and if not which of the two centres would be best?
