Hey all,

New to the forum but I will give it a go anyway.

Just got the new 2016 IBIZA FR Tsi 1.2 110PS. Lovely car and fantastic to drive, though I don't believe I'm getting the best out of it power and economically wise.

I'm using 95 unleaded Fuel (Mainly from tesco) at the moment. SEAT store advised be that Normal unleaded would be perfectly fine as long as it was 95 or above.

But when I look inside the petrol capital says Min.95 RON Super Unleaded... Now I've been using normal 95 normal Unleaded since purchase, but it just feels as though this car has much more to give.

What can you wonderful people here suggest?

Continue using normal 95 unleaded or switch to Super Unleaded and higher Octane 97 perhaps.

Thank you all.

Rob

Ah fair enough, so it's definitely "broken in", I have the 2015 105ps 1.2 FR and I noticed the engine felt slightly more responsive when I hit around 8k, nothing major but still...

Try comparing it with someone else's 110ps FR if you know of anyone or just try a few tanks of shell vpower or another premium fuel, worth a try I suppose.

I have tried super unleaded and don't feel much difference at all, I tend to use tesco unleaded.

Yeah Definitely broken into haha. A few trips to Manchester and Brighton did that.

My first turbo car this is since I moved from a Fiesta Zetec 2014. It really just feels like this car has more more to give but im wondering if it is down to the quality of fuel im using.

Yeah im hoping someone here has the new 110ps here and can guide me on this. Im aware the new 110ps are the new engine so people im sure will still be toying with the fuel.

Next time you need petrol, when you get to Tesco drive past it and find a proper petrol station.

As above, Esso Shell and BP sell fuel for the discerning car owner, a special treat for that car could be a UL+ from one of the above once every 5 fills to see if you notice any difference.

Me, personally, I fill wife's Polo 1.2TSI 110PS SEL with Esso 95 as that is convenient and gives Tesco points, so I get Tesco points even though I drive past their supermarket!

Morning!
Slightly different engine to yourself, I have the 1.0 TSI 110 DSG. My fuel cap also says 'MIN 95 RON, Super Unleaded'. It's the 'MIN' part that intrigues me...

I've used exclusively Shell fuel since I got the car in March. My usual tank is Fuelsave 95 RON. It's had two tanks of V-Power, one of which I'm currently burning through at the moment. I can comment that the V-Power gives no overall impression of increased power but I do think it increases throttle response and most definitely quietens the engine down.

Don't get me wrong, the engine isn't loud anyway whatever fuel is used but I can tell the difference when 99 RON is being used. The 3Cyl characteristic noise almost disappears.
When using 95RON, the 3Cyl noise becomes more pronounced and at lower revs too :)

Just my 2p but I think I'll be using a tank of V-Power every couple of months just to keep everything ship shape. After all, it only adds about a fiver to the cost of the tank, if that.
Other than that, I'll carry on using Shell/BP/Esso/Jet/Texaco 95 RON fuel as needed. I won't be buying fuel from supermarkets. I'll leave them to their fruit and veg.

I think that you will find that the "MIN 95 " is to cover folk taking their cars abroad and some (crazy/fun loving) people might get as far as places that use 91 octane fuels - for example.

A friend at work used to get uptight about crossing France in his TDI Mondy as it specifically mentioned the max limit on added bioderv that it could handle, and maybe at that time Mr Froggy had cars that could happily use higher levels of bio derv than some UK sourced new cars.

Would you say I'm quite safe to use 97 super unleaded then? Why does different stores make a difference in quality of petrol?

Yes, there should not be any problem with using 97, as to why they all chose slightly differing UL+ octane ratings - well I've always found that very strange as well! Might just be down to the available raw spirit being very close to 97 so some say it is 97 but others try getting off with saying it is 98. Remember, in UK and probably elsewhere, refineries share the raw spirit and add their own "brew" of additives at the tanker filling points, which makes me think that there will only be 95 and 9? available at these sites any where in UK.

Shell vPower Nitro is supposed to be 99. And that's all I ever fill it up with

I know that the inside petrol cap of the new standard IBIZA SC are normal Unleaded recommended. But since mine is the turbo equivalent I just wanted to make sure it was perfectly fine to be using regular unleaded instead of super unleaded.

One thing, I think that a lot of pressure or maybe even more than that is getting applied to car manufacturers to only supply cars that will run on UL to give the figures used for tax rating etc. Obviously high performance cars don't comply but their importers and their buyers will pay extra for that "privilege" !

Warning:- any or all discussions on which octane rating of fuel should be used and why will always bring out some conflicting strong opinions.

One thing to consider, it seems that all refiners now just add a supplementary chemical (ethanol) to lift the octane rating up and that commonly used chemical has lower "thermal content" than the refined base spirit so you will not get extra power from that - though for an engine designed to use that octane rating of fuel there is no choice as it will either pink badly or retard the timing to accommodate that fuel and so give lower power output.
