Hope this is in the right place. Just bought this car today at 55,000 for a 53 plate. It hasn't had it's cam belt done before and reading this forum I think it is well over due. The only problem...I'm on a budget due to working part time....Do I need to use a VAG specialist or just a good rep local garage?

Sorry newbie question I know.

Finally my bonnet is chipped to &*&^ careless young lady owner to thank for that...any idea how I can find the colour code for a touch up pen and should I try to do it myself (lots of chips) or pay professionally to get it done.

Any help would be appreciated.

The paint code is in the boot, under the carpet next to the spare wheel on the left hand side...
Or go into Halfrauds and they can get it from you reg plate / VIN number...
Personally I would get the bonnet re-sprayed by a body shop, touch ups never look right, unless you are very very good, it'll look touch-ed up.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Cambelts should be changed every 60K miles or 4 years, so yours is over due. Most people recommend the water pump being changed as it can fail, but it is not essential, especially if your are on a budget. VAG specialist vs good and trusted local garage will depend on price. Go for the cheapest, as long as they use the correct oil for the service (I assume it's not only a belt change) There is a sticky thread in the TDI section with a list of them, it has to be 5W-40 and VW 505.01 spec. Of course, get them to stamp your service book.

When I had mine done at a local garage it about £300 for the belt and tensioners.

I do my own servicing but not able to tackle a cambelt so took mine to the local trusted garage,as these are common engines across the vw group they had done plenty before and charged me £255 all in inc tensioners.

Thanks guys, and thanks for the welcome.

As for the paint I think I'll try to go professional on the bonnet, and get a touch up pen for the rest. Thanks for the info on where to get the paint code.

As for the cam....I guess I need to get it done asap....and as I want to keep the car till I get married and have kids, and then maybe after, I think I should get the pump done at the same time! Metal impellers right!? Hope that isn't too much.

So also 2000 miles overdue for it's service, and this is the 6th year. So I'll need to get a deal for both together. Any ideas on what price would be reasonable?

Thanks for the headsup on the oil. Will mention that when I'm checking prices.

Got 53mpg today on the way to work, and its s joy to drive. Well happy. Fast discovering the perils of buying private....

just checking the 'full service history' it came with, they admitted it was a couple of thousands of miles over due but they neglected to mention the last service was 2007 so it's also a year over due!

I'm gonna try and book it in somewhere tomorrow...accident waiting to happen! Break fluid hasn't been checked for 3 years!

I've got two quotes coming in tomorrow, first at Nationwide was 580 or so! Hoping the next two will be better.

Unfortunately I'm in North Wales...Middle bit.....Quite far from Stoke...

Good news on the paint and chips...decided to try colour wax and with the touch up stick that waxes in the chips it's not looking too bad till you look up close. Should protect the metal anyway.

My colour code VIN sticker seems to be missing from the boot. I guess I need to call a dealer for that?

I bought my cambelt kit and did it myself, right piece of piss if your a technician lol
Just search around because the belt on the ibiza is exactly the same as the polo, golf, leon, a3, a4 etc... all using the same engine so places do them quite regularly ;)
