I want to do a conversion from a 1.4 8v that is on its last legs to a 2.0 16v. i was also wantin to know if i can link the 1.4 gearbox on to the 2.0 for better acceleration. is this a hard conversion and what is involved? i didn't play for the car and i want to make a rally rep but it needs the go aswell as the looks. does anyone wonna lend a hand :D

Argghh My eyes!!!!
considering the work involved and the cost of a mark 2 gti 16v itd be cheaper to just buy one for 2k. dont forget the conversion would also be harder to insure.
sell the 1.4 and im sure it wouldnt be an awful amount more to buy a reliable 16v.

I've got 'all the bits' to do it - and I'll know how they go together... I would suggest tarting up the 1.4 & finding 1k and buying a 2.0 16v with all the kit....

Brendy is spot on. Cheaper in the long run
TBH, unless you can pick up an accident damaged but complete 2.0 16v, dumping the current car and buying a half decent 2.0 16v is probably cheaper in the short run anywa, and as Stu suggests, it'll only get expensive-r in the long run...

i know a few peps in the trade and get things really cheap. i am just wondering how to do it im doing to conversion no matter whaat :)

If your going to go to the effort of doing a conversion why not go for something different. VR6, 20VT as you could buy a 16v mk2 but not a vr mk2 [B)]

i agree with jenk... do a conversion that is differant and not one you can get as standard...

I hear the mk2 VR6 Turbo goes pretty well

cost everything up and then see if its worth it.
i had all the intention to do the same, even got to the stage of ringing scrappers up about written off cars to price up all the bits, just isnt worth all the hassle, everything will need to come out of the car, brakes loom, fuel pump, maybe tank? didnt get that far, then theres getting the engine in making it go. its something you can do yourself no doubt about it, but ideally only with a semi complete donor car as then all the little bits youll need youll have.

i abandoned the idea about 2 months ago and decided to take everything off the car i have now and put it on a 2l 16v. figured it would all be cheaper in the end, and theres a lot to take off my car!

makes me sad though, just posted this then re read it and then looked at the picture underneath and i love my car :)

You could get all the bits for tuppence ha'penny but it'll still cost you significantly more to insure than a factory 2.0 16v...

Don't forget all the other things that need changing aside from the minor issues of engine, clutch, gearbox. Things like the ECU and wiring loom (complete), brakes front and rear, and to do the front brakes you'll need to change to the larger front hubs and hub carriers used on 2.0's, and swapping the rear beam for one with an anti roll bar would be a good idea too. I know you can get aftermarket rear anti roll bars but these are intended to be used in addition to the bar which is an integral part of the rear beam (and hence not removable), not to replace it.

And that's before you start getting into the nitty gritty of actually doing the conversion and finding all the bolts have siezed, and they'll all need replacing when you put it back together, gaskets, various small parts and brackets... All those odd fivers and tenners here and there on small parts add up alarmingly quickly.

I really wouldn't entertain the idea without a complete donor car to rob bits off as and when. As stated before... It's going to be about a billion times easier to go out and buy a proper factory 2.0 16v. And it'll probably be significantly cheaper too.

I agree there with G - given that I have the donor car that I know inside out & it's still a huge task removing stuff (I started on the spiders web that is the loom today)

If I didn't have teh donor I wouldn't be starting this!

i'd agree with everyone else on the doner car

when i done my 20vt conversion i bought the whole car and stripped it bit by bit labeling it all up

is a massive task to undertake and insurance is also a pain in the ass so worth looking into 1st

so you got a 1.8 turbo in yours?
did you do it yourself and how long did it take you if you did?

you have to admire the people that do that bit different

yep was a 2.0 16v now a 1.8 20vt

i bought a complete mk3 cupra for £1500 and then put it all into mine

all the work was done by me so kept costs down to a minimum, time wise it took me a week to get the engine in and running and then a couple of weeks after that playing about finishing the interior and wiring off

you got any pics of the car with the conversion done? would be v.interested to see,

you change the dash and everything?

ive just bought a new gearbox for mine by the way for anyone who cares, cost me 75 plus about 15 petrol to get it
does anyone have any idea on a price for having itfitted, i watched him take it out and it seemed an utter ball ache, although was a bit of a nutter, just cut the whole front end out and cut axles

I did a gearbox swap on my 1.4 across 2 days. some of the driveshaft bolts were a *******, that's what took so long.

great fun tho

there's the pic above as my avatar

i've got no way of hosting them but if someone can do that for me i've got loads of them before during and after i can email

from what i gathered it was a case of unbolt the drive shafts firstly, take gear linkage off, unplug 2 plugs i think there was then just unbolt gearbox and replace with new?

would do it myself and may give it a whirl but its bloody heavy... will need to look into it a bit more if im going to attempt it... bring ouyt the trusty haynes
