Hello Guys
I am looking to put a set of 18s on my 2017 mk3 leon with 225/40/18 tyres...... The ET offset for the wheels is 48 with a rim width of 8.5 ..... is this ok ? are there parameters that i should be looking at etc

Looking for best offset and rim width options please

I would take the advice above with a pinch of salt...
The Standard Leon 18" wheels are offset 51 and 7.5 J wide, so the wheels you are proposing will stick out more, and also the inner edge will be closer to the strut. whether you get rubbing issue or not I'm not sure

Personally putting 225/40 on an 8.5J rim will look stretched and, well, ****....

The offset (ET number) will determine how much more or less your wheels are tucked under your wheel arches or protrude outwards. The lower the ET number, the further the wheels will extend outwards. If the offset is too aggressive (a low ET number), you run the risk of your tyres rubbing the wheel arch edge.

So, if the standard wheels on your Leon are 18” diameter, 7.5” wide with an offset of 51 (i.e they are 18 x 7.5j ET51), and you were to fit, say 18 x 7.5j ET 45 wheels and keep the same size tyres, you would have 6mm more clearance between the suspension strut and the inner face of the wheel and the outer face would ‘poke’ out 6mm more than your original wheels.

There’s a very handy offset calculator on ‘will they fit.com’ (https://www.willtheyfit.com/). If you input the tyre and wheel specs for both your existing and new wheels and tyres, it’ll calculate the impact on clearance between the inner wheel face and suspension strut and any increase/decrease in ‘poke’ of the outer face.

Also bear in mind;
  • That if you change your tyre size, this could impact the accuracy of your speedo. The calculator also calculates the % speedo error of fitting different sized tyres.
  • Fitting different wheels to those fitted on the factory production line is considered as a modification for insurance purposes, so you’d need to declare the modification to your insurer, and they may charge you an increased premium.

Thank you SRGTD very much appreciated.

@Fingers - a quick and easy way to see if an 8.5J wheel with an offset of ET45 would be OK for your car is to put your car details into one of the alloy wheel retailer websites. They’ll only show you wheels that will fit your car.

I’ve just looked on www.rimstyle.com and used vehicle details 2011 Mk2 Seat Leon and selected 18” wheels with an 8.5J wheel width. The results of the search does include 8.5J x 18” wheels with an offset of ET45, so the wheels you’ve been sent should fit your car. You’ve not said what model of mk2 Leon you have, but if you do the same search on a Mk2 Leon Cupra, pick a set of 8.5J x 18” ET45 wheels and add tyres, it’ll show you various tyres in 225/40 R18 size. So, on the basis Rimstyle are saying wheels of the same size and offset as those you’ve just bought with 225/40 R18 tyres will fit a mk2 Leon Cupra, then you shouldn’t have any rubbing issues.

If you use the calculator on www.willtheyfit.com and input details of your existing wheel/tyre set up and your new set up, it’ll calculate critical differences (e.g. wheel poke and tuck, whether you’ll experience any speedo reading errors etc.) between your existing and new set up,
