Hi there im sure the turbo on my tdi 110 had gone, as it spitting oil[:@] and a cloud of white smoke rises when i acclerate over 1500 rpm, im after a replacement turbo but was wondering does it have to be an exact replacement turbo (110) or can i put another turbo say 130bhp or 150 bhp.

The oil has now gone to the exhaust and is blowing oil, only driven with the, gone turbo for 2.5 miles or less does this mean that there will be more problems or just a knackered turbo?

Ive also had a remap done to the car and am wondering will this affect the new turbo's power or will that remain the same as its recordered on the ecu.

Also how can i recognise the turbo model spec, as i can see it due the dirt and the mechanic wants the turbo model Number:shrug:? im stuck. Could anyone help me please.

Its a 110bhp Se,2003 year.

Thanks

White smoke is usually steam, meaning water is getting into the exhaust, meaning the head has gone.

Turbos die by bearing failure, lots of oil into the exhaust, blue or black smoke out the back. Lots of oil, turbo bearing is pressure-fed on its own from the filter.

If you change the turbo you will need the remap to be redone. Different turbos have different operating characteristics.

White smoke is engine oil burning and unless you stop driving it straight away you'll suck all the engine oil out of the sump, into the engine, burn it at a vast rate of knots, and seize the engine as a result of no oil left for lubrication.

my turbo blew and there was so much white smoke i could not see the road..
and yes you can put the 130/150 turbo on but as said previous you will need another map!!
the 130 unit would be the better option as the 150 is more expensive nad your fuel pump is the limiting factor so there will be no benifit from the 150 unit :)

i sent my turbo to the turbo clinic near leeds, as mine started chucking blue/white smoke
on start up, then one day was a contiunual blue smoke.
they collected my tubo same day from work, checked it and sold me an exchange one.
came with 2 year gaurantee....110 tdi ibiza

113k , but did sometimes limp mode from around 104k miles.
had one of those tuning boxes , which apparantly can push a turbo too much.

Thats why I want to look after my turbo as much as poss including keeping the vanes free, good quality oil, I was thinking re tuning box but in view of what you say I'd rather have a longer lasting turbo than a few BHP more, I get worried when the vanes do stick & get "over boost". A few years back I was told by a dealer that I needed a new turbo (because I kept over boosting) £900 please was his quote. but I just got my local garage to free up the mechanism on the turbo & manually rotate the vanes through its full cycle, since then WD40 & regular (unless I forget) Exercising of the vanes has kept it good as gold.

dealer forget it unless you have a spare 1000 pounds...lol
took mine out in 2 hours....had it collected, exchange turbo...actually looked new.
no sticky vanes, and the seals plus shaft were damaged on mine.
used to do 55 mpg, now does 62!
They do a free estimate, either have exchange or new unit.
how many miles on your car?
all the time you are driving it with stuck vanes, you are not doing your car any favours

Just over 80K but the Vanes are not stuck, as I say unless I forget for a month to "exercise the vanes" & I just poddle around for a month & local driving only. Then next time I accelerate hard I will get Limp mode..........all I do then is give it a bit of exercise up a 70mph hill leading to Junc 12 M3 or join M3 at Jnc 13 & go Northbound hard that soon clears it & if I remember to do either of those say once a fornight it goes OK. When it gets serviced or oil changed (I change oil ever 6000 miles anyway & the reason I do that is for the turbo's sake) I manually work the attenuator arm on the turbo through its full motion (haven't got VAG.COM to cycle the vanes).

Was getting bad a year or so back because I had an injury & didn't drive too far ...engine never got warm, all local all, slow or tickover....& the I could see the problem creaping up on me & when the car got serviced I was going to use that INNOTEC stuff but a few weeks before I had chance the "exercise" the vanes & when it got to the garage it wasn't found to be required.

Muttley, hey, you spelled it right does this "Oil filter" to the Turbo ever get changed/replaced ?

Sorry, I only gave a quick answer and it has confused the issue.

The turbo is fed by a separate oil pipe which can be seen coming off the main oil filter bracket and snaking past the engine to the turbo The effect is to feed a clean source of high-pressure oil directly to the turbo bearing - the pipe is tapped from the output side of the filter. The oil feed to the engine is very slightly restricted to balance the feeds properly.

So the filter I'm talking about is the one that gets changed at every oil service, not a separate one specially for the turbo.
