the general principle is to try and stay it peak torque levels for best economy, this for the tdis ranges from 1900, so like nath says 2100 will be good for him, from my experience keeping the revs been 2k and 3k is best whilst accelerating but once settled into a cruise you can put it into a higher gear and drop them down as low as 1600 and it still be ok if the road is flat, if approaching a hill then a down change to get the revs up a bit so its not labouring will provide better econmy.

Very sound advice, this is why I do 2100rpm as my route is a mix of slight gradients and flats. This means I do not have to change gear (laziness! :D) and keep it constant as changing gear uses fuel as well.
