Hi All
My 2001 Cupra has been in the wars recently, at first it would intermittently idle poorly and generally feel flat when warming up which turned out to be the coolant temp sensor. This has been replaced and those symptoms have mostly gone away. The problem is, Im still having engine issues which are very similar, but slightly different.
In normal driving the car usually feels OK, I occasionally get a tiny bit of surging as it comes on boost but nothing too bad, but if I boot it hard and hold the revs past 4.5-5k with full throttle, the car sometimes hesitates quite markedly feeling like a limp model. After this kind of incident its impossible to accelerate properly at all, its constantly surging as if im flooring it then lifting for a couple of seconds, then repeating as if the ignition is retarding loads or there's suddenly no boost or a fuel blockage. Its worse at low RPM in the 1500 - 2.5k range, but if I continue driving it clears itself within 10-15 minutes and its back to normal without switching the engine off.
If I get home and do switch the engine off whilst its still playing up, the next morning when I start the car up, it will idle fine for about 10-15 seconds then almost completely die, sounding like its on about 2 cylinders with the car shaking itself to bits. If I try and increase the revs it will sometimes rise but othertimes will do nothing. When it does rise Ive tried holding it at ~2k but although it will hold those revs for a few seconds, it then starts to die away again and ends up back below idle speed on 2/3 cylinders even with the throttle still applied. The only way Ive found around it is to hold the revs higher (3k+) and constantly blipping it above that for about 5 mins, then as it starts to warm up the problem clears and its OK again.
I think the fact that its triggered at higher RPM at larger throttle applications suggests some kind of load / boost related fault. I recently bought a VAG COM lead off ebay to help troubleshoot the problem, but its faulty so Im waiting on a new one, but in the meantime any ideas chaps?
On initial impressions it seems similar to the issue here

but more intermittent and also not usually triggered when cold.
cheers
Chris
