02M gearbox question.

Hello everyone,

I have a 2002 golf gt tdi pd150 with a knackered 02M gearbox. My brother has a spare 02M gearbox off his 2004 Leon cuppa r. My question is are they exactly the same? I know they are the same code but are all the ratios the same and will it fit directly into the golf? Thanks in advance.

It'll fit but there were a few slight ratio variations I believe.
Your best bet is to compare both of white build stickers on each car which can be found on the boot floor or inside the service book.

Oops just realised you stated it was a Cupra R and not the Cupra or FR TDI.
You may find the ratios too short going onto a diesel.

About a 2 hour drive, not to bad, what mileage does the gearbox have? Is it a fully working one? And how much would you want for it? I will check the build stickers first like you said. It would be handy if the spare one would fit lol.

Thanks mate, I had a look at it but it's all jibberish to me Don't know if it is worth splitting the gearbox and seeing if there is anything obvious wrong with it.

It made a loud crunch going from 1st to 2nd and then the gears all felt like they had moved. As in the gearstick was in a different position and also it won't select reverse at all.

Hmm, can you still select 1st & 2nd?
I'm wondering if the selector fork has sheared it's rivet, it's quite a common fault in the 02M gearboxes.

Yeah it will select all the gears apart from reverse but they don't feel normal.
