Thanks, I tried to avoid doing all the things that annoy me about instructional Youtube videos, probably did some new ones though.
I did miss showing the remote control but realistically how often is someone in the back seats going to call the shots about what is on the head unit ?

Hi, I really can't fault the Philips, in a perfect world it would run stock Android as the operating system rather than WinCE simply because the world is going that way but I don't know of a credible manufacturer producing such a device with all the features of the Philips.
If I try hard enough I can understand the appeal of the OEM units but I wouldn't want one.

ah yes i read that forum last week and was extremely informative so i saved the relevant links - will be purchasing the same adaptors. Although i have chosen to go for 'JL Audio Evolution C2-650x 6.5-inch Coaxial Speaker System' from caraudiodirect - more pricey but I'm more familiar with JL products

Hi guys, new to the forum, Just wanna say a massive thanks to The_Saint for the his video upload on the Philips Sat Nav review!
Not sure if its news to your guys or what, but you can update the maps to the latest Tomtom maps (2014.09) Europe maps for the iGo 8.3.5.

Now my question is, do any of you guys have any experience with the iGo Primo? and is it worth updating to iGo Primo from iGo 8.3.5?

Hi Quaddragone
Thanks very much, I gave it a bash.
I am very interested in your info on Map updating for IGo 8 if you could pass it on.

I tried Primo and although it looks quite a bit nicer than IGo 8, it crashes reliably after about 5 minutes, having waded through various GPS navigation forum threads it would appear that Windows CE is very particular about memory usage and this seems to have an issue for some units.

If only the Philips could be hacked to run stock Android, I look at the EBay no-name units and like the feature list but absolutely wouldn't part with more than £50 for unbranded, I'm a bit old-fashioned I guess.

Hi The_Saint,

With regards to the original maps that came with the unit, if i am not mistaken, it came with a set 2011?Q3 R3 NQ maps...
After reading around 500+ post, and tonnes of researching...
There are 3 main map providers, HERE / NQ / Tomtom, the R3 or 83 on the maps indicates R3 = iGo 8 (Release 3) or iGo 8.3 and 83 = iGo 8.3.X or later release. So essentially, if you have iGo 8.3.X or later, you can run any of the R3 / 83 Maps

Now on to the maps itself, there is little differences between each of the map providers, but I have found with TomTom maps, it is slightly clearer and the 3D buildings display + POIs are better (at the expense of storage space, maybe a few mb more)
So if you have a 8gb microSD, you can fit the entire europe map onto it, it think its around 5gb in size.
When you do download the maps, you will need to place the files into its own folder, search "where to put different iGo files" and its the first link

as for the iGo maps - search "GPSpower TomTom 2014.09 Europe" and again its the first link where you can get access to the maps

(I cant paste the links directly as I only have 1 post lol...

It may be slightly confusing at first to understand all of the map updates etc, so feel free to msg back and I will do my best to answer.

PS - My iGO version is 8.3.5

Thanks very much, as you probably know already - performance-wise the fewer maps you install the better, I just have UK until I want to visit another country.
I am also on 8.3.5 but found a 2013 Navteq update at some point.

The NV maps are good, but I do recommend the tomtom 2014 Q4 maps...its less of a fiddle with the .3dl and .fbl..more over their POIs are extended and up to date :)

with regards to performance of the maps, I wonder if a faster ie, Class 10 or better microSD will make a difference...The unit is very responsive with just the UK maps installed so far as well as the UK POIs and the 3dl buildings :) I think the tomtom 3dl buildings are better and contributes to the overall responsiveness of the unit..when I had the NV buildings, it didnt feel as quick

Yes I have a fast card and no issues at all with just UK, I would imagine adding individual countries would be fine but the setup I was sent with every European option enabled was pretty dire.

Ok thanks, I will look into getting a Class 10 or better microSd card..the POIs also contributes massively to the performance of the unit..custom POIs takes ages to load whereas stock extended POIs from tomtom map are easy and quick!

I have updated the maps using the Tom Tom ones you pointed me at thanks. I didn't give it much thought, simply overwrote whatever seemed to match under the "Content" directory. The only visible difference I have spotted so far is the signage for major road junctions seems much more prominent and the unit no longer nags about old maps.
How much do roads drastically change in 2 years ?

I wish there was a changelog I can direct you to...But from personal experience, the updated tomtom map found an address which was previously an empty field / flats under construction and some student accommodations are updated with the correct names.

I guess with the updated maps its more a peace of mind thing knowing you can update your unit whenever and pretty much have an accurate directions to a destination.

Agreed but I suspect that there is more marketing than reality about the map update reminders especially given the healthy update fees.

The_Saint, are you aware of any skins for the iGO 8.3.5? such as a tomtom like skin or ux? and are iGo Primo skin interchangable with iGO 8.3.5?
