Leon 2.0 TDI Sport v Audi A3 2.0 TDi Sport

Hi

not posted for here for a while but looking for some opinions from you guys. I am considering getting a lease car before the end of the year and with a personal contribution together with my allowance I've shortlisted the New Leon in 2.0 TDi Sport form and the equivalent 3 door Audi A3 2.0 TDI Sport. Would have hung on the the FR TDI but i'm limited to cars under group 13 insurance and I don't reckon it will be. :(

Having just test driven both cars (though demo A3 had the DSG) I'm having trouble deciding! Heart is saying Leon I like the shape and it looks bang up to date but head is saying the A3 with its nice detailing will be the better longer term ownership experience. Very impressed with the handling of both. I found the Leon sport seats really good and bit more supportive than the A3 - being 6'3 both gave a much better driving position than my Ibiza TDI Sport. Although both demos were barely run in the 2.0 TDi lump seemed alot more progressive for torque than the 1.9 which in my car seems to kick in with a wallop.

As others have said its the amount of hard black plastics that disappoint with the interior of the Leon though pleasingly the dash wasn't quite as dull as it looks in the pictures.

I've got quotes on both £394 pcm for the A3 and £332 for Leon based on a 3 year contract at 17000 miles pa. My allowance is £315

That price is for the Leon as standard with only metallic paint and mp3 player as options.

I limited the options on the A3 to 5 spoke star alloys, met paint, cruise control and folding door mirrors.

I know only a few of you will have driven the new Leon so far but has anyone had any experience of the Audi A3 in 2.0 TDI form?

Basically i'm trying to decide whether the Audi is really worth the extra cash per month!

And has anyone seen a new leon in Eclipse Blue yet? I really like the colour on my Ibiza but not sure if it will suit the Leon as well as the Black. The brochure also lists a "trailer towing device preinstallation" at £130. I take it this isn't a full on tow bar as it seem pretty cheap for a manufacturer fit job.

If a factory order for the A3 i'd have it by November but same factory order for the Leon could be up to 12 weeks which could be pushing it a bit to get it registered by the end of the year before the diesel tax break runs out. :thumbd:

Any thoughts most welcome

Cheers :)

if its any help... when I came to replace my lease car last year (was the Cupra 20VT)- i test drove both the A3 2.0 (sport & sline, DSG and without) and also tried out the old Leon FR 1.9 PD 150.

Now I know the new leon is completely different (and i hope much better!!), but in the end I decided the difference in price of the Audi was not justifed by the difference in drive (there wasn't really any anyway !!).

So I ended up with the Old Leon, and £60 a month back in my pocket to go towards the tax.

Any regrets?... Nope - none at all !!

Don't forget the new Octavia. Same price as Leon but far nicer interior (in my humble opinion). You might have guessed that I have just bought one (for my wife).

Seat Leon, it makes better use of the chassis than a A3 or GTI - unless your into badge snobbery ??!!!
But I do agree with the comments re too plastic dash etc.
Have words with devonmikeboy he's got a A3 4x4 2.0tdi - should be none standard by now!!!

@ vwsurfbum :ban: The A3 and VW Golf look nothing alike. If anything the A3 looks more like the Leon then the Golf.

When i was looking at getting a new car after my little incident in my Cupra last November i drove both the VW Golf 4motion and the Audi A3 quattro 2.0 PD. Basically didnt like the Golf for alot of reasons so got the Audi. Since then i have driven the Leon 2.0 PD i have to say i would still have the Audi. My Audi is an S-Line model so it is really lovely inside but even the base model felt like it was built alot stronger then the Leon / Golf both inside and out. I was involved in an accident where somebody drove into me ten days after i got the car from the dealers and the Audi got very little damage considering the impact and managed to drive home from, where as the the other car was killed on the spot and was a right mess. I also do not like the interior of the new Leon which has got far to much plastic which felt quite cheap and nasty to me plus the resale value ( which i know dosen`t concern you ) would be alot better on the Audi. Alot of it comes down to personal taste and as long as your happy with the car thats the main thing.:)

Just a small point but as the Sport has not been replaced by the more powerful FR would it be the FR you are getting or the Reference Sport or will the car be a used one? ......Hang on, having reread the thread I am a little confused as the original posting date appears to be 18/09/2005. I am currently in Cardiff in an area where Dr Who is filmed so maybe I have fallen through a rift in the space time continum?

1.You try to drive em both,
2.couldn't spot a big difference?(leon is much more sporty),then second stage, you step outside and have a look at them, who do you like more?
3.like em both?then think about the price!Leon is much more.Think of audi's price with the same extra's with leon(the most are standard fot the last),
4.not having problem with spending money on byuing a new car?Get the RX8 and forget everything else(if you dont mind spending a fortune on fuel stations),
5.If you ask me,i choosed the new leon fr tdi with extra bi xenon, electric roof, usb, bluetooth, trim etc.(before i had an a3 '00,many mechanical damages, but very good in driving,i sold it when i tested the new leon),
hope i helped,after all,its only you,that know what you want,so get it
