Tyre Wear

Hi all.

Had new tyres (Continetal Sport 7) fitted on my VZ3 Estate in July last year. Car has just had its service where they have advise that the tread on the fronts is very low getting close to change. I have only put 7,000 miles on the car since I have had it last April with the tyres doing less than that.
Has anybody experienced anything like this before.

Thanks
Phil

Have you checked the tread depth yourself?
It's not unknown for some garages to try and "up sell" tyres and brakes at service time.

Yes, I had it happen with tyres last year.

My VW Polo GTI+ was serviced and MOT’d by the VW dealer last year just before I part ex’d it against my current car. I was sent the usual VW video walk round by the workshop tech while my car was up on the ramps during the service, The dealer highlighted the tyres would ‘soon need changing’ - they had circa 5mm tread on the fronts and 6mm on the rears 🤣. Car passed the MOT and tyres weren’t an advisory (nor was anything else an advisory either). I ignored their early warning about the tyres soon needing to be changed (I usually change my tyres at circa 3mm tread depth) and thought that was the end of it.

2-3 weeks later the dealer emailed me a reminder about the ‘amber warnings’ highlighted during my car’s recent visit to their workshop, inviting me to book my car in for the necessary work to be carried out. They didn’t elaborate on what the ‘necessary work was or what amber warnings related to, and there were no amber warnings - or any other warnings for that matter - on any documentation relating to the service / MOT. I assumed they were touting for business and wanting to sell me new tyres. Out of curiosity I emailed them asking what the amber warnings related to even though at that point I no longer owned the car.

I never received a reply………..

Just one of the reasons why dealers can't be trusted, every service I've been given the hard sell on 'urgent safety issues', being made to sign a disclaimer when I refused to change half worn tyres.

I imagine it works well on those who aren't knowledgeable on cars, but it's wholly wrong to rip people off just because you can.

Happened to me once with my Octavia; "it'll shortly need new rear brake pads"
2 years later when I sold it, it still hadn't needed rear brake pads

Well I am going to show my age, I had a Rover 230 turbo and got through the tyres very quickly (less than 7k) but the stock tyres were very soft compound which was great for going round corners at speed but rubbish at lasting. I recall the lease company (it was a company car) asking me what I had been doing to the car - my response driving it.

In general I have found the Conti 7 handle very well but don't last as long as the Michelin PS4S when used out on the track.
