Android Auto Upgrade Reliability

Hi All

Have recently bought a Seat approved used Leon, and just hoping for some advice regarding Android Auto.

We bought the car, had it a week and had to return it due to a couple of niggles (a sticky rear brake and the radio cutting off when the window demister was activated). A month later, 2 new carriers and a new rear window and we are getting the car back.

In the meantime we have had a brand new Seat Aroma as a courtesy car. This has had Android Auto - something we were not bothered about before, but now would like.

Our new Leon does not have it activated, and the sealer wants a ridiculous amount of money to switch it on (we did try to blag it as compensation but they weren't having it!)

Has anyone used the companies that send you the files to activate via email and you stick them on your own SD card? Are they reliable? Any issues? Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance

you have to update the firmware so that you can install a patch. It couldn't be easier, sorry

Really sorry but I'm very confused.

Are you saying that this not possible to activate android auto with software version 351?

Surely the car could have had it activated from new with this software version?

And could you explain this patch you are referring to? My understanding is that to activate android auto, it is fundamentally just a key that needs to be entered via an SD card?

Thanks again

Ok. Thanks for your input.

I am still open to input on this topic, particularly regarding the reputable supply of android auto unlocking.

Thanks in advance

Sorry, I'm a bit lost.

Miracle solution?

Can the firmware be upgraded over the air or is my car too old for that?
I think what @cairus is saying that to upgrade it yourself with Toolbox you need software to be 0369, but for a dealer to do it via the 'proper' way it can be done with your software. Be aware if you wanted Apple Carplay as well you would probably need a later USB socket.

He can do everything himself, which takes less than 20 minutes. There are two solutions, either tooolbox without firmware update, or firmware update and firmware patch.

While major updates often bring better app integration, improved voice control, and enhanced navigation, some users report occasional bugs, connectivity issues, or compatibility problems with certain vehicle models.

Some info for you - all at your own risk of course:

You need this firmware, then follow the instructions in my post if you want to try it.. like I said there's a risk you may lose settings so again at your own risk (but it worked for me in the end however I am quite technically minded!)

Many thanks all

Given the available information, plus a lengthy discussion with an auto electrician this morning, I have decided to not proceed with performing an activation myself until the car is out of warranty. We will enquire with Seat about an accurate cost, but for what is gained with Android Auto, I expect this will be prohibitive and we will revisit in a couple of years time when the warranty is finished.

The activation at the dealership shouldn't be that high, them main cost is the activation pack itself, which I commonly see at around the £200 mark, sometimes a little high and lower but around there.

Then the cost of inputting the codes via ODIS. depending on the charge from the ODIS user (main dealer vs authorised independent) so you're over the £300 mark there generally. I would be at around £320 for a legitimate OEM activation using the official pack, maybe a little less if I can source the pack cheaper but usually I can't compete with the main dealer on pricing for Full Link activation.

Historically I've known the main dealer to do deals where it costs under £300 all in for the activation, which is a reasonable cost when you consider the alternatives (aftermarket head unit) and the fact that the PR codes are updated at factory so there is no risk of the activation being wiped with future updates and/or dealer visits.

Yes, you can do it much much cheaper via toolbox, SD card updated etc but those carry risks so it's whether the money saved is worth the risk.

You don't mention what area you're in nor if the auto electrician you spoke with is a VW Group independent specialist (which would be best to use) so I'd proceed with caution on who you get to do the work.

I'm sure Yorkshire retrofit on here (site sponsor) could sort this out for you reliably and easily and at a lower price than the Seat dealers at minimal warranty risk.
