Who has fitted an aftermarket head unit and what did you install in their MK3 Leon?

I’m picking up a Leon ST FR tdi on Saturday to use for a 60 mile commute each day so will spend a good couple of hours in it each day. I want to upgrade to get car play for the live traffic and was thinking about one of the units that fit between the screen and mib unit or just fitting an aftermarket head unit. Who has fitted an aftermarket head unit, what did you install and what pro’s and con’s were there, did the sound improve and did you lose any functionality compared to the standard unit?

Assuming the car you are getting is the one described as your partners car, 2016 Seat Leon ST FR tdi 150, then it should have a MIB2 unit which should be AA/CarPlay compatible and would just need activating.

Use your phone?

Agree; a ready made solution 👍 🙂.

I find Waze is excellent, including providing real time info on traffic conditions. It also saved me from potential pothole damage to my alloys and suspension last year; I was driving a route on unfamiliar roads I’d not used before and it gave advanced warning of the potholes.

Both of my sons use their phones rather than the system in the car as it's better and always bang up to date.

That’s interesting, do you know how I get carplay activated and will the USB port in the Center console need replacing?

Yes, it definitely doesn’t have it.
Have you got a pic of your screen? If not, grab one with the screen showing the device part number and software version info

Press MENU, press the top right SETUP/SETTINGS option, scroll down to the bottom and press SYSTEM INFORMATION and there should be a software version number along the lines of "MST2_EU_SE_XXXXX" and a part number like "5F0 XXX XXX X or 5QA XXX XXX X" or alike

At least that way we will know what we're dealing with, otherwise it's just shooting blind with advice.

Also, has it got an option for FULL LINK in the menu screen?

Does this information help?

So it does have Full Link, it just needs to be activated. Probable that you have the right USB port but I'd get it checked to be sure.

I'll leave it for the others to battle it out on how etc

are you sure that the FeC is installed but just not activated? it is an early device. I personally would use the toolbox for this

As I suggested in post #6 above it just needs activating and probably a new USB port to support Apple CarPlay (not needed for Android Auto), activation costs vary, I think some on this forum can do it for a reasonable price.
Also you can update the map card yourself but requires care and proper investigation on the subject, see this forum.

Why should he pay for activation when it's possible for free?
