Fixing various rattles and buzzes - some tips.

Hi All,

With thanks to a few other members, I’ve managed to fix a lot of rattles and buzzes over the past months, so wanted to share what’s been done so far, as it’s only in the past two weeks that the car has become really refined.

First are rattles behind the dashboard; I’ve put a few posts on the ‘What did you do today’ thread, so have a look there for that info, as there’s quite a lot!

Boot lid rattles sorted by replacing most of the ‘V’ shaped spring clips that hold the trim on.

Doing all that made a big difference, however the main one has been trying to find a cause of random vibration at high speed. I’ve had new tyres, wheels checked and balanced by a couple of places, suspension checked, and still no joy, so took it to a place I used to use who do road-force balancing. They let me watch as they did it, and we found that the passenger side rear had two flat spots (one quite bad), and was oval - the machine didn’t even give a balancing solution! That was repaired, then road-force balanced and the car hasn’t ever driven this smoothly, must avoid the potholes!

Thanks to @grabania , I ordered a felt interior trim kit for the door pockets, glove box and storage trays…you wouldn’t believe how many small buzzes and rattles from your stuff are cured by this. This is detailed in the ‘what did you do today’ thread.

And finally, last weekend I took the retractable boot cover off (it’s an estate), and stuck pieces of felt anti-rattle tape to the four points where the front ‘flap’ bounces against the roller tube, more where the end caps slide in to remove it, and a few pieces on the car where the cover clips in, again, you don’t realise how much that rattles…until it doesn’t!

Have done about 500 miles so far this week, there’s less road noise (and no random vibration), and it feels much more refined inside.

I hope this helps others that get as frustrated by the buzzes and rattles as I do 😃

Cheers,

Nick

Do you have any pictures posted of the things you solved?
Hi There,

Unfortunately not, I just did the jobs and posted various replies to threads, so have a look for those!

If there’s anything specific you’re trying to fix, just ask the question and someone will be able to help you out.

Cheers,

Nick

Hi There,

I posted quite a few on the 'what did you do to your Leon today thread', so do a search on there. Unfortunately I didn't take many (if any photos), but if there's anything specific you find that you want more info on, just ask :)

My only occasional trim buzz is my door card if I have loud bass heavy music.
Have you encountered/fixed this?
My passenger door card comes a little lose at the bottom when it gets closed too vigorously! so I might just take them both off and re-fit with new clips.

The addition of the felt door-lining kit helped a lot with rattles - you don't realise how much small items can sound so loud! There's still the odd little buzz when I play bass-heavy music, but nothing I would consider a problem. It just needs pulling apart, sound-deadening and identifying anything loose.

It does sound like you need to replace a least one of those clips though!

From experience pulling the Octavia's door cards apart, check all the connections, wiring harnesses, etc. just to see if anything's got space to move; you can then go about fixing them from there.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but if you do find the problem, please let us know.

Thanks for both the suggestions.

Think i'll get some felt to line the door pockets - to save having to empty them :ROFLMAO:

I'll get some new clips - and refit both door cards, paying close attention to any loose/rattly items.

I got the felt kit from Graficar in Turkey.

It arrived within a few days, and makes the car look and feel a lot more ‘premium’!

There is another post on the ‘what did you today’ thread showing what comes in the kit, as it’s all doors, glovebox (another source of rattles), steering wheel storage box, centre console, etc.
