Whining Noise - 2019 Leon 2.0 tsi

Hi there! I’m four months into ownership of a 2.0 tsi Leon ST (DSG) 2019. I love the car but there are a few niggles spoiling it for me.

The biggest niggle is an annoying whining noise (bit like a supercharger whine) that matches the revs. Only really noticeable with the windows down but I now can’t ‘unhear’ it and it’s driving me mad! I had it looked at by an Indie VAG specialist who said it was coming from the timing chain area but couldn’t say more without stripping things down. They did say their Golf R makes the same noise (albeit quieter) but it just doesn’t seem right to me. Car is on 50k with no other problems. Don’t fancy forking out to replace the chains then find it doesn’t cure it! Any ideas?

Second niggle is a ‘stepping’ or ‘feathering’ on the rear tyres causing a rumble. I’m hoping better tyres and an alignment may cure this?

Lastly is a ‘rustling’ noise when the box shifts up when cold, particularly if driving slow. Was wondering if the clutch plates are going. Shifting fine though.

If anyone has any ideas it would be great. If I can’t solve them I may shift it on soon as it’s just spoiling what should be a lovely car!!

Have the exact same car and engine, the whine i have not loud and similar to a friends mk7.5 gti, the frrr when changing gear i have that too, i have similar mileage to you and have had the gearbox serviced, so hopefully its normal?

Thanks for your reply - that’s reassuring to know. I tend to over-worry about my cars but feel better to know it isn’t just me. The DSG was serviced on mine at 37k and everything is functioning fine. Like you say, hopefully it’s normal.

I wonder if anyone else has noticed it…

I'd ignore the whine. If it's a problem, you'll soon know about it!

The feathering on the tyres is typical on cars with independent rear suspension. The linkages and bushes get a bit worn and alignment goes out a bit. New tyres will stop the noise but it'll just come back once they wear.

Yeh, would be good to hear if anyone else has the frrrrr noise on gearchanges, definitely more noticeable when cars cold.

Haha I’ll take that advice. Maybe look into a sports exhaust to drown it out haha!
I see some people have added sound deadening to the boot and arches to block the tyre noise. Might give that a go!

Did this to my ST and it made a big difference to the thudding i used to hear.

I have the same car, and by the sounds of it the same whining noise as you. Only had the car for 3 months and it's done 30k miles now.
As you say I can only hear it with the windows down but it's not ridiculously loud or unhealthy sounding.
Can't say I've heard the noise when it changes gear though.

Same here with the whining noise, and I was stressing about it until I did some research online.

I'd mentioned it to the garage before it went in for it's first service under my ownership last week, and it was returned with a clean bill of health so I'm just putting it down to being a characteristic of the car.

I can vouch for the sound deadening helping reduce a lot of noise in the boot, and you can do a fair amount under the rear seat bench too, which is a doddle.

Get a full Hunter alignment done - the tyres were feathered when I bought the car, and around 7k later on new boots after having alignment done, they look good as new

Enjoy it, it's a great car!

Yeah that’s the noise - sounds a bit like the supercharger whine on the old R53 Coopers but more subtle. Seems like they all do it. The VAG guy I took it to suggested it was likely the sound of the timing chain running through the plastic guides. Who knows - safety in numbers though I hope
