Hi again. My 2009 1.9 has just past the 200K mark. And now there's a bit more blue smoke than i would like.
It's only when started after sitting for several hours. Or if I rev the engine heavily (not something I make a habit of).
I'm guessing it's piston rings. This would be an expensive fix.So as the title says, I'm wondering is it worth buying a used engine. prices seem to range from £350 to £500.

Good chance that the used engine wouldn't be any better than your current one. Unless you can see it running first
It's a big risk alright. I wish I had the facilities to do the work myself.

How did you get along with this?
i had a similar issue with my MK4 golf over 10 years ago, turbo gave up and damaged the engine, replaced with a lower mileage engine and drove fine til i sold it in 2016, to date car has gone through several owners change and still on replacement engine. shell mileage has covered 240k, engine probably half of that ( i had the replacement engine pulled from a 120k mileage) so reckon its done around 160-170K now given i had replaced when shell mileage was 194K

a replacement engine would be good, if you see it in full working order and has the full service history to back it alongside with any work carried out, such as timing belt/water pump.

let us know how it goes. best of luck

Haven't done anything yet. Need to investigate more and save the money.
