Leon 1.6 TDi - Oil leak fixed but still might be a leak ?

Hi ,

I’ve had a turbo replacement and since it was replaced there was a leak. The leak was coming from the oil feed connecting to the top of the turbo so the mechanic then replaced the washer and tightened it back up and the leak appeared to have stopped as we got it back up on the ramp and watched that area again and the leak had stopped.

My issue now I’m having is there still seems to be small oil patches under my car everytime it’s parked and I’m hoping it’s just oil residue from probably the 2 litres of oils that’s leaked out during the 3 weeks before the oil feed washer was replaced and tightened back up. Could this cause this ?

I’ve attached some photo as I’ve managed to get my iphone round the back and watch the camera off my iwatch

Who replaced the turbo?

To be honest the only way to know for SURE is to completely clean that area, entirely, and then see if oil reappears.

Not my usual mechanic because my normal one was away but he will not be touching my car again.

My usual mechanic has returned and he was the one that fixed the oil feed leak as he said it wasn’t even that tight but why he was at it he replaced the washer. The image below shows a bolt missing from the turbo that he will be replacing but could this be a cause of a leak to ?

At the moment I haven’t noticed a drop in my oil level since Friday and I’ve probably covered around 100 miles. I will have a better indication when I check later this week though. I’m really hoping it’s just oil residue and oil I am seeing on these images are just when the oils thins and runs when the engine gets hot.

Not really knowing where that bolt is, I couldn't say.

My advice would be to properly, thoroughly clean the engine bay. Brake cleaner, degreaser, the works, and then when you are 100% confident there's no residual oil that's the only way to be sure there's no further leaks.

The green circle on this image is the missing bolt.

My main mechanic isn’t now bank until after bank holiday weekend so in the mean time I’m gonna keep an eye on my oil level

Don't think that missing bolt will cause any oil leak - its a bolt which holds the compressor housing to the bearing cartridge.
Unless - the main turbo bearing/cartridge is leaking oil into the compressor housing!

Somebody else said the same thing regarding the missing bolt. The turbo seems fine and the car drives fine. I think I’ve located where the oil is coming from. Is this one of the oil return bolts ? If so what do you recommend
