Charge management system in the car needs to know that the battery was replaced so it could apply the right charging procedure. It is done using a diagnostics device.

If replacing like for like, just increase the serial number of the battery by 1. If uprating the battery, then the capacity of the new battery also needs to be changed. In VCDS, the coding is in address 19 CAN gateway, the channels are these listed below

IDE03256-MAS06105-Battery adaptation-Rated battery capacityxx Ah
IDE03256-MAS06106-Battery adaptation-Battery technologyEHB
IDE03256-MAS06107-Battery adaptation-Battery manufacturerVAO
IDE03256-MAS06108-Battery adaptation-Battery Serial Numberxxxxxxxxxx (10 digit)

I use Obdeleven. This is how it looks:

Replaced my battery earlier this year to Yuasa 75 ah

True - I have the Carista dongle and pay £30 a year for the Carista subscription so I may have more functionality. Well worth the money though.
Sorry off topic a bit but - What is your interpretation of how things will pan out for users of the original Carista dongle now that they are pushing the EVO version?

On the same topic I like the words they use Compatible with certain VW, Audi, SEAT, Skoda, Nissan, Infiniti, Toyota, Lexus, BMW, Mini models. Exact features’ availability depends on your vehicle, I am guessing that means they don't support SFD and certainly not SFD2 (Which I don't think anybody supports currently).

I only have and use Carista for "having in the car with me", ie diagnosing when away from home, I use VCDS when at home, my worry is that unless I buy a new dongle, ie the EVO version, that I'll find that I've lost the ability to diagnose faults when "out and about" - okay I could "jump now" and replace both my Carista original dongles - but I've not worked out if that would be a waste of time and money for what I use Carista for. Carista is very, or can be very useful for owners of VW Group cars marketed after the point in time that Carista was launched, I'd never plan to use it for making "one click adaptions" though - just too risky.

From what their web-site says, I think the EVO is being aimed primarily at people who's cars were not compatible with the original OBD version.

They also say that the EVO has "lightning-fast connection, superior Bluetooth connectivity, stable communication, and a robust design" - which is all marketing fluff and does not really justify an upgrade, as the functionality for my car is unlikely to change. It's just a bit shinier. I can't see any mention of the OBD becoming obsolete - yet.

I also use my Carista dongle to talk to my VAG DPF app, which is very useful for real-time monitoring of my DPF regens.

I'll stick with what I've got for now, until something stops working.

Okay, maybe I was being swayed by the "discount for loyal users for a limited period" and worried that my not spending now would cost me a bit/lot more down the line. Though maybe that "carrot" was really just a bid to get established users to drive out the bugs from this new dongle!

Edit:- I do understand that "things" move on from their original form/functionality, I've been with VCDS since 2002, ie almost the start of VAG - COM, so I've accepted that I've needed to trade in VAG - COM for VCDS - USB and then that for VCDS - HEX. Also, as I was an early adopter of Carista and so signed up to a different licence, as I'm a light user of it, I'd rather stick with that version/type of licence and not need to move up to the current one. Also, I'm only interested to coverage for VW Group products, I can use my VCDS as a general OBD2 scan tool for some engine issues on other car brands.

LOL! - that's what they want you to do. "Buy it now, or you'll miss out..." etc etc. The joys of FOMO.

Totally agree that things do get superceded and upgraded etc. The way I use Carista works for me. IF the new dongle gave new functionality and new tricks, then I might be interested, but for now, I have enough shiny things in my life.

Wanted a new battery today after needing Seat (AA) breakdown service after my 2018 Leon FR (with its original battery) won't start.
The battery supplier, who has been in the same premises & run by the same family, since 1946 couldn't code the new battery. I had assumed that as the largest battery supplier in the area they would be able to do so. When I pointed out the need to code the reply was, "We never do that & haven't bought the equipment to do it".

They would have let me drive away without even mentioning the need to get the battery coded to the car.

So I now need to pay the local VAG specialist to do the coding.

Many drivers won't know of the need to code a new battery &, judging by my experience, this battery supplier won't tell them.

I agree with your thoughts, ie not very good, this long established battery centre should really be aware and already prepared to do that job, silly really.

What happens if a battery is replaced but the coding not done?

Is it different depending on whether or not the new one is like for like?

(You'd expect nowadays that the software would just figure it out and all would be good! i.e. no coding needed)

The car alters the charging profile based on the age of the battery. If you do not tell it that you have a new battery, it could damage or shorten the life of the new one. Like for like doesn't matter. The car needs to know that a new battery is fitted and that includes the amps and CCA of the battery. No idea why modern technology can't sort that out!

Battery life is reduced due to thinking its an old battery and not a new one. No VW Have not designed an automated way and BMW are the same.
From a BMW Site but applied to VAG motors
As your battery gets on in years and gradually loses its charging capacity, the vehicle adjusts the amount of energy needed to recharge to operate at optimal levels. The older the battery the more charging it requires. Registering your battery lets the relevant control module know that a new one is installed and as a result, the vehicle will reset the old battery statistics and won’t try to overcharge the new battery thinking the previous one is still inserted.
