windscreen wiper motor

dunno if anybody else had a similar problem, but my windscreen wiper motor went on the blink. I stripped it down and found that one of the brushes was sticking. WD40 did the biz. Seemed like a wierd fault to have so i thought i'd share. :blink:

Hi,
I think mine is suffering from a sticky brush at the moment.

Is it easy to get the plastic cover off and get the motor out ?

Any tips to help save time ?

removing wiper motor.

you will need to remove the plastic cover, which means removing the wiper arms. These were the main problem with my car. They we very tight. I made a small puller to pull them off. Once off then the rest is easy. The unit is screwed together, so you need not drill rivits or the like. I used WD40 on the brushes, and its been fine now for a year. I do not think that they will stick again. The wiper mechanism needs unscrewing and removing with motor and all attatched. cables are plugged.

Took out the relay and cleaned up the contacts (did look a bit burnt), tried it and wipers still a bit slow to start.
Then took the wiper mechanism off and the housing from the motor. The comm looked a bit black so cleaned it up (along with the brushes) with a bit of Jif and an electric drill to rotate the shaft. Cleaned it all up with electrical contact cleaner and oiled the moving mechanism parts (although they were not stiff).

Put it all back together and it seems to have cured it.

I think it was probably the comm and brushes that caused the problem in the end.

my wipers went into vertical mode during a torential storm on the M4--AA recovered the car and changed the switch----wipers went vertical again on M62 during a storm----AA recovered the car AGAIN and seat changed the motor---all ok now bar from scratched wheels from 2 recovery operations :confused:

Had an odd fault with my wipers this afternoon. Leaving my parents house, went to switch the wipers on - nothing.

Fiddled about for a while - different speeds, changed fuses, even tried switching the car off and on (the software engineer in me :))

Rang SEAT Assistance and while waiting for them to come out, went out and had another go. And they worked fine.

Just arrived home and they worked OK for the whole trip. Anyone experienced anything similar?

Hmm... just had same problem again, but if I lift the wipers off the windscreen and then switch them on, there's no problems. I'm hoping it might be just the wiper blades that are knackered. Might get some new ones tomorrow and see if that sorts it.

defo defo NOT the wiper blades fella---if the the motor is too weak to overcome the friction of knacked blades then imagine what it has to do at speed with rain also! Get the motor changed and or switch/relay.--oh and possibly do the wd40 mod mentioned above, if your car is out of warranty.

Yep, conclusion of SEAT Assistance / AA is a knackered motor. Seems to work intermittently but the wipe speed is dead slow. Dropped it off at the dealers this morning and got a Rover 25 courtesy car. Still under warranty (in its 3rd year) so ought to be a simple replacement of the motor.

Should be sorted by tomorrow lunchtime (hopefully).

Thats it. Just stops on the screen. Nudge them a bit and they work again. Stop some time later again. This gets worse until your out in the rain more than in the car. Was a stickey brush on my motor, cured with WD40. the slow speed sort of hops on the screen, guess the brush contact was intermittent.

Yep - that's what was happening. Got the wiper motor replaced under warranty at the dealers and all's well now. Less than 24 hours between me dropping it off and them having it ready for me - including ordering the part in, so well pleased :)

I have a similar problem of the wipers stopping. It only seems to happen on intermittent setting, but when they have stopped it doesn’t matter what you do with the stalk, the wipers don’t work. 10 – 20 seconds later they start going again. I haven’t been able to try moving them by hand to see if they start, either nowhere safe to stop or they start going again before I have been able to pull over.
I thought it was the relay, as I don’t hear the relay click once the wipers have stopped, but now wonder if it is motor brushes.
When your wipers had stopped did you hear the relay click?

no there was no relay click. The power was still supplied to the motor, the brushes were sticking and so had no contact to the commutator.
