Black alloys dilemma

Hi there,

I have black alloys on my MK3 Leon Black Edition, and I have done kerb rash on one of the alloys, but the others have paint flaking off.

I'm weighing up a dilemma, last time I had them done on my driveway, they looked great and they were done in a couple of hours, I'm looking at quotes for them to be redone and I'm getting emails back saying they are going to take 3-4 days to do so no car for that period of time is a lot.

Now, did I choose the cheap option by using the done at home option and now paying the price of the paint flaking off, and I should really go for the more thorough method which includes chemical strip, shot blast and powder coat? I don't catch my wheels much on the kerb, one instance since owning the car but something as small as a stone chip stands out to me when the car is cleaned and I don't want to pay the money for it to be not worth it in a few weeks time when they get chipped by gravel.

Cheers.

@CallumFox5; I agree with @BigJase88 - powder coating is the way to go as it’s a highly durable finish. Proper prep work prior to powder coating in a proper temperature controlled environment is also important for longevity of the finish - so a quoted 3-4 days suggests you’ll be getting a top quality job.

Although powder coating is very durable, IMHO no paint or powder coat will stop stone chips altogether. The alloys on my car are powder coated and they’ve had 2-3 very small stone chips in the 12-13 months the wheels have been on the car. The stone chips were very small though and I just bought a touch up pen the same colour as the wheels and touched the chips in so they’re not noticeable. I’d recommend you get a gloss black touch up pen (assuming you’re getting them done gloss black again) of the same shade of black that your wheels are so you’re prepared if you pick up any small stone chips.

I recently got mine done gloss black powdercoat for £200 for the 4 inc removing and refitting tyres.

That was v cheap mind you they had an offer on. Usual price was £320

Thanks for your comments @BigJase88 and @SRGTD.
I have two quotes currently, £150 for two wheels (Kerb rashed and the most significant paint flaking), or £280 for the set. 4 days to complete.
Or Wheels and Tyres £50 each. Wheels on car £65 each. 2/3 days process.

Where are you based? Most decent places have a same day turnaround for a basic full refurb and powder coat.

I agree Powdercoat is definatley the best and longer lasting finish which will often take 3-4 days. Some alloy places will lend you a set of wheels whilst its being done to keep ypu going. I believe Amazing Alloys in Telford, not far from Kiddy offer this service.
