0W20 Engine Oil?

Hi guys.

I bought a new Seat Leon 1ltr TSI Dynamic (70 plate) just before Xmas and I have a question please.

I've just noticed that my engine oil level could do with topping up but I seem to have misplaced my handbook. So I was just wondering what engine oil I should buy? I have however got some 0W20 fully synthetic oil left over from my previous car and I was just wondering If this oil would be suitable and safe to top up my oil level?

The new engines use 0W20, the 1.5 TSI does

Because It's the recommended oil for my previous car, a 2015 Suzuki Swift Sport.

@motormadmarc - The oil should also meet VW’s specification. Sorry, don’t know what the VW oil spec is for the current VAG 1.0 TSI engine in the mk4 Leon.

Sorry, don’t know what the VW oil spec is for the current VAG 1.0 TSI engine in the mk4 Leon.

VW 504 00, VW 502 00, VW 508 00, ACEA C3 or API SN

They are all VW oil spec standards, but are they all suitable for a 1.0 TSI petrol engine with a GPF? - e.g.

• VW 502.00 is for petrol engines without a particulate filter and presumably a 2020 1.0 Leon will have a GPF.
• I think that oil meeting VW 508.00 standard isn’t backwards compatible, which presumably means it can’t be mixed with oils with an earlier / older VW spec standard.

The manual is a joke, the specifications given are for 'emergency' use of 0.5L, otherwise you must contact your workshop?

Do Seat produce oil for their workshops? Or, as I have dealt with in the past each dealer negotiates a deal from an oil company to bulk buy, branch I worked in I used Total, another Mobil etc. Just another con to get you in the the workshop profit making machine.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I've phoned up a couple of main dealers this morning and they both gave the same Info. This Is the answer that I got from the last main dealer that I spoke to :

"The oil you need is a 0W20 (VW508.00 specification) something like Castrol, Shell or similar standard".

In most cases, when I have a service, they would usually put Shell or Castrol oil. I did have a service (from a Seat dealer) that put Texaco oil in, and it actually made the mpg worse on the 1.0EcoTSI. The car came with Castrol oil from factory on 24 month, long life, I had a baseline figure on my usual mpg, and after a oil change, for the next 3 months before it was returned, it returned approx 5% poorer fuel consumption where in my mind new oil should make things the same or better right?

Just adding on this thread as the handbook is spectacularly unclear. Having got the oil warning level message just come up. For the 1.5 Estate I also want 0W-20 VW508? Will go to my local VW dealer as the Seat garage is miles away

The car came with Castrol oil from factory

Just out of interest, how do you know what oil it came from factory?

When my car asked for top up I rang the service and they said use LL 5W-30. Confirmed with 2 garages

I put 0W20 in my 1.5 eTSI, after 2 local seat dealers said 0W20, but a VW dealer did say 5W30.

If anyone has topped up a slightly different spec of oil it is not really worth worrying about will be completely fine until next service

I think the thinner 0W20 is to help with warm up time of the engine thus getting better environmental / mpg stats.

My 1.5 TSI did warm up quicker than any car i have previously owned by a long way
