Boot Locking Mechanism Headaches

Reinstalled in the car and it still doesn't work.

The weird thing is though that if I keep the boot open and lock the car and then try the handle, it returns to its original position.

When I close the boot and do the same thing, it doesn't.

I'll probably take it off again and spray some grease in there, as opposed to penetrating oil, but it's just crazy to me that when I replicate the fault, it only happens when the boot lid is closed.

Any thoughts?

Last one on this - thankfully!

Got some Comma Spray Grease last night, took the handle out of the car again and disassembled it. Sprayed this in all the same places and after leaving it a while, it was springing back without any resistance. Put it back in the car and it was working even when the hatch was down and the boot was locked, so it's as good as new.

One thing to keep in mind - the pin that holds the 'S' handle in place needs to be in the same way round as it was originally. When I did it the other way round, the handle creaked when I pulled on it. It might just be age and use, but hey, it happened when it was inserted one way and it didn't the other way...

Now to put the trim back on...

So a month later, the sodding thing has only gone and stopped working again. It seems like the Comma grease was fine for freeing it up and getting it working again, but it didn't last very long. Looks like I'll be taking it apart again over the next week and trying to find some longer lasting grease...

Either that or some lithium grease.

I'm hoping this time I can get away with just opening the boot lid and trying to work it in that way, rather than taking off the trim this time - spray it in and just work the boot handle over and over while the lid is up.

I don't know if I can face climbing in the boot again.

Drove home today and was in a bit of a daze. When I first got in the car, I put my stuff on the back seat, given the boot wasn't working. Parked up and absent-mindedly walked to the back of the car and pulled the boot handle. Ended up with a shedload of grease on my hand but to my surprise the boot actually opened. Decided to strike while the iron was hot, and so went to Halfords and got some of the WD40 Specialist High Performance White Lithium Grease*, kept the boot lid open so the grease would sink into the mechanism, and worked the handle about fifty times. Locked, unlocked, opened, closed, opened, closed, locked, unlocked a few times more, and it still seems to work. Who knows why it stopped, but I'm just relieved I don't have to pull the trim off again.
