Hi,

I started looking into getting my 2016 Leon Cupra 290 DSG tuned and emailed some garages near me. A couple of the replies I got back have confused me a little and I'm hoping to get some more information / links to better understand.

I use my car for my regular commute so one of the things I wanted was to keep the comfort mode for the day to day driving and only tune the cupra mode.

A couple of the replies I got back were basically saying this isn't possible and after the remap all modes would behave the same. This kind of put me off, as most of my driving is unfortunately the boring daily commute and not fun hooning about in cupra mode/

So my questions are:

Is what I'm suggesting possible? Can other garages keep the comfort (or equivalent) mode? These garages were generic tuning garages, maybe I need to find a VG group specialist?

Have I just misunderstood their reply?

Would this also effect things like manual mode, auto engine stop start?



Thanks and sorry for the newbie question, any help much appreciated!


P.S. I live in Kent, so if anyone has any recommendations I'd be happy to hear them as well.

Hi,

I’ve not had my Cupra 300 remapped but I’ve had 5 cars in the past with Revo maps and all I can say is the easiest way to manage how your car performs is with your right foot? I imagine in comfort mode the throttle response is still dull in comparison to Cupra mode. Alternatively you could look at the SPS switch thing they offer, not had one on any of my cars so not entirely sure how they work. But perhaps worth a look?

@chrism84 I have only had experience of the Revo map and this works in the same way as your current setup does with the modes.

When in Comfort mode you will have more power than you had previously but it will still be softer suspension and gearbox will be in Drive mode, steering will be softer.
When you switch to Cupra mode as the car does today the suspension will stiffen up, the steering will get a bit heavier the gearbox will go into sport mode and you will feel the power of your map.

The SPS Switch allows you to return the car to stock mode so that if you have to put the car in a garage you will limit the power the car delivers, if you are for example going round the top end of scotland and cant find any Super Unleaded then you select a different setting, You can select full blown mode and on a stage 1 you will also have an anti theft mode.

Fuel consumption is about how you use your right foot you can get high 30's or you can get mid teens its up to how you use the power.

I expect the tune would affect all modes as you are essentially tuning the engine not the modes. However putting it in comfort mode should still have the same effect (limiting throttle response) etc.

It sounds like a REVO map does what I want. TC Garage seems to do REVO remaps and they are a reasonable distance away, has anyone got any experience with them?

I can say is the easiest way to manage how your car performs is with your right foot?

Fuel consumption is about how you use your right foot you can get high 30's or you can get mid teens its up to how you use the power.

As an example during my daily commute I'm mostly cruising 40 - 50 mph up the motorway. In comfort mode I'd be in 6th gear at less than 2000rpm whereas cupra mode would be in maybe 3rd gear at ~4000rpm. I don't think there is anything I can do about this other than switching to manual or taking the gearbox out of sport setting?

If I got one of these custom remaps would the option to still independently put the gearbox into manual / normal and sport settings still exist, or would the ECU remap now control the shift points?

I guess this is part of my confusion, I'm not sure exactly what is controlling everything, as thanks to this forum I've now found out you can get a DSG remap as well as an ECU remap?

It's a bit far from you but Unicorn do exactly what you are asking for. Custom tune with the standard map kept in eco (comfort) setting. It's explained on the website https://www.unicornmotordevelopments.com/vw-golf-mk7-software-prices.html

At the last SCN Meet in blackpool (I live on the East cost) I did steady 70 mph using ACC.

I have a Revo stage 3 map on my car and still get 38/9 mpg but at the same time when i do a track day i get 11 mpg

I use normal / comfort mode when doing my daily driving and DSG in drive very happily, when i am in a rush then I drop dsg into Sports mode and then when I am in the mood for a lot of fun I turn it into Cupra Mode. the modes work in the same way as the normal car but obviously there is lots of extra umph but economy is about how you push the car in my experience.

Remapping the ECU will not affect the modes directly, you will still be able to select Cupra,Sport or Comfort.

Stick to trusted VW Group mappers;

off the shelf mappers such as APR, REVO or custom tuners such as MRC Tuning, Unicorn Motor Developments.

It sounds like you just don't understand the DSG box fully. No matter what mode you are in, the gearbox can be put into Drive, Sport or Manual mode. The only difference between the comfort drive mode and Cupra drive mode is your suspension stiffness, throttle response and LSD settings. Changing the gearbox settings doesn't affect the drive mode settings. There is no actual power difference between Comfort mode and Cupra mode so tuning them separately is pointless. For your commute you can put the car in Cupra mode and just flick the gear lever backwards once to change to D mode. This will give you all the benefits of Cupra mode as mentioned above except now you will cruise at 50mph in 6th gear. You are not forced to use the gearbox in S with Cupra mode.

Getting a remap will not affect your ability to control the gearbox separately to the drive mode so no worries there. Your car will function normally apart from more power in all modes.

I wouldn’t trust any tuner that wasn’t tried and tested as a full engine rebuild or turbo replacement would make a serious dent in my bank account, I’d soon pay £600 to a reputable tuner such as Revo, APR etc.

However fuelling at 50% throttle pedal press will be less in eco mode, with a steeper curve the further you press the pedal, if that makes sense?

The mapping process will, like a few others have said, affect the engine response in all modes, but the engine will still receive different instructions from the throttle pedal in each mode, depending on how much you have it pressed down. Its as simple as that. I do remapping, and also have a cupra 300 (previously a 290). Mine is at about 360bhp at the minute, and it handles it easily. Any more than that would be pointless. You should expect to pay £350+ for a decent remap on these mate.

Sorry to hijack your thread pal didn't see the need to make my own, I have the 184 diesel FR I'm looking at getting a stage 1 remap just wondered has anyone here had one done, if so what are their thoughts on it? I know most fwd cars struggle for traction when the roads are greasy after rain but does a remap make that worse? Thanks in advance

well it gives it more power, so when it is greasy or wet outside, you'll need to edit your driving to suit. the 184 responds well and should go to around 222bhp without starting to affect the smoothness of the drive. I have attached our power graph from our file, I have done probably 15-20 cars with this engine (golf GTD/ Leon). You'd be very happy with it I'm sure. always worth doing. decent economy improvement too.

You are correct, I didn't understand what was really happening. Thanks for the detailed explanation, it makes a lot more sense now!

May i ask why any more than 360hp would be pointless?

Because it is unusable with any more than that, the traction can't cope even in the dry. I initially had it set to 370ish and as soon as the outside temperature got to less than 10 degrees, the clutch started slipping as there was too much power with the denser air.

Clutch slips because it is a crappy clutch not because your car cannot handle more.
I run 470hp now on my manual one. Does the job well from 80kmh and up.
Gas pedal is not 0/1 switch.

that was kind of the point I was making though wasn't it? If the clutch can't handle it, the car can't handle it, that's the clutch we are given!
